However, the fans are anxious about the next sequel since the original came out in 2019, and it’s been a little over two years already, and we haven’t gotten any solid details, but we do know that a sequel is happening.

Producer of Hobbs & Shaw, Hiram Garcia ascertained along with actor Dwayne Johnson that the upcoming sequel is in the developing phase. So, finally, the question arises, when can the fans expect to see this highly anticipated adventure flick?

What is Hobbs & Shaw about?

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is an American action movie helmed by David Leitch and jotted down by Chris Morgan along with Drew Pearce, from a book by Morgan. Hobbs & Shaw is a spin-off of the Fast & Furious franchise that takes place after the exhibitions of the 2017 film “The Fate of the Furious.” It stars Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw alongside Vanessa Kirby, Idris Elba,Cliff Curtis, Eiza González, and Helen Mirren. The story revolves around the odd pairing of the duo as they work together with Shaw’s younger sister ( played by Vanessa Kirby) to fight a programmed terrorist (played by Idris Elba), endangering the planet with a fatal infection.

When would Hobbs & Shaw 2 hit the theatres?

Unfortunately, there is no release date available, although the upcoming sequel has been in discussions for quite a long time, and till now, nothing has been confirmed yet.

Due to the pandemic, things got delayed, and it greatly affected the production of the forthcoming sequel.

According to actor Dwayne Johnson, “everybody involved with the project is getting started. Just gotta figure out the creative right now and the direction we’re going to go.”

However, it is expected that the movie will arrive by 2024 at the earliest though filming is yet to kick off.

Kelly McCormick, who’s one of the producers, said, ”Everybody’s really busy on that particular franchise. I mean, who’s busier than Dwayne Johnson?”

She further added, “And, he’s critical to the project. We’re just waiting to hear, to be honest. I think it’s something that would be awesome to continue, but I think everybody’s just been so busy working on projects in the COVID of it all, that we’re still waiting to hear… There’s a lot of excitement to try to make something.”

“Hobbs & Shaw 2 has a lot of potential, in my opinion,” actor Statham said on the series’ renewal!

Neither the cast members nor the producers have announced the renewal of Hobbs & Shaw 2 at this time of writing—however, few reasons do tell there’s hope for a sequel. The first film grossed $759 million worldwide, which is pretty impressive.

The showrunners Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham want to do a sequel. Interviewed in 2022, Johnson said: “Hobbs & Shaw 2 has a lot of potential, in my opinion; I think fans would adore our fantastic ideas.”

The latest news about Hobbs & Shaw 2 isn’t about a Hobbs & Shaw sequel at all; rather, it’s about what’s going to happen next in the Fast Saga: a Hobbs solo film starring Dwayne Johnson.

Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Hobbs in a post-credits sequence from Fast X, despite his earlier declaration that he would never return to the series.

Johnson revealed that the Hobbs spin-off will be the upcoming film in the Fast and Furious franchise. The Hobbs spin-off movie doesn’t currently have a release date, but it will serve as a transitional piece between Fast X and Fast & Furious 11, so work on it will need to go quickly because Fast & Furious 11 won’t be out until 2025.

One of Dwayne Johnson’s closest associates and partner at Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram Garcia, stated (via TheWrap) that Hobbs & Shaw 2 is now in production: “We are writing the story, but we never like to announce anything like that too soon.” Production may not begin for some time as the script is still in development, but the sequel will happen.

For an improbable operation, Hobbs & Shaw teams up a renegade ex-MI6 agent named Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) with the tough Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). The MI6 agent Hattie Shaw, who is Deckard’s sister, is set up to steal a lethal virus known as “Snowflake” by Brixton Lore, a cybernetically modified ex-soldier possessing superhuman skills.

In order to prevent Brixton from releasing Snowflake upon the world, Hobbs, Shaw, and Hattie are compelled to cooperate despite their tense past and diametrically opposed personalities. They take part in outrageous action scenes, funny banter, and family drama as they explore the world, stopping in places like London, Samoa, and Chornobyl.

At the end of the movie, Hobbs and Shaw have to put aside their disagreements to rescue the day in a clash between the good guys and Brixton. Helen Mirren plays Deckard’s mother, Magdalene Shaw, who makes a cameo appearance and offers some vital support.

Hobbs & Shaw 2 Release Date

It appears that the much-anticipated sequel is not happening anytime soon. In an interview with ComicBook.com, “Hobbs & Shaw” producer Kelly McCormick disclosed that the second movie is not in development as of now.

“I do feel like there were a lot of seeds planted to try to create a spin-off in a way that included a Kevin Hart and a Ryan Reynolds and sort of all that kind of stuff,” McCormick said. “That was intentional but not necessarily because we had plans in mind just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with if anybody or we wanted to go for it in a different way.”

In case Hobbs & Shaw sequel happens, McCormick started: “I don’t know, I mean Dwayne’s a really busy guy and you know, he would be the one to motivate all of that. So, we’re ready if he wants to and until then he’s just dominating, so all power to him.”

So there’s a possibility that a sequel is still on the cards but for now, we do not know if Johnson will be involved. We’re guessing that the new movie will only be out sometime in 2023 or 2024.

Why is Hobbs & Shaw 2 taking so long?

In April 2020, series producer Hiram Garcia and star Dwayne Johnson provided some updates on Hobbs & Shaw 2.

With Johnson stating that mainstay Fast & Furious writer Chris Morgan will pen the sequel, and that “Seven Bucks Productions will produce again” (via Instagram). After several months of relative silence, Fast & Furious producer Kelly McCormick stated, “the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other interfering projects were keeping Hobbs & Shaw on hold” (via Collider).

In August 2021, producer Hiram Garcia confirmed that Dwayne Johnson will not return to the main Fast & Furious franchise. They had a few personal differences with some of his co-stars. But that, fortunately, wouldn’t “in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans”.

With Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw returning for F9’s post-credits scene, fans can rest assured that Hobbs & Shaw 2’s main stars are still on board despite the delays that resulted from the pandemic and Dwayne Johnson’s departure from the main Fast & Furious movies.

Hobbs and Shaw 2 plot: What can the story be?

As of now, plot details are kept secret, but there are some hints on what to expect or predict from the sequel. Hobbs & Shaw 2 will likely shift its focus towards a sci-fi film, with the introduction of Idris Elba in the original film making things clearer for the upcoming sequel to make a new turn.

Apart from that, speculations wouldn’t make any sense unless we hear it from the filmmakers or any of the cast. Nevertheless, Dwayne Johnson revealed that in the sequel, there would be surprises from the characters.

And I said, ‘I have this idea and this direction for Hobbs.’ And I pitched it and they all loved it. It would be the antithesis of what Fast and Furious movies generally are in that they continue to go on and go on and go on. In this case, I still want to do the quintessential Hobbs movie. That, without giving it away, you watch a man walk off into the sunset. Donna loved it and they’ve been wonderful partners at Universal, but I said, ’You know, we have an opportunity here, I think to go against the grain and let’s disrupt things a little bit, and let’s create a movie within the Fast and Furious world that is unexpected, that I think people will go, ‘Oh man, like, wow, thank you for that.’”
