Paramount+’s new series will bring a new edge to the thriller genre with its plot that is centered around insomnia! Yes Insomnia, a prominent sleep disorder will be the driving force behind the story for the series. ‘Insomnia’ as the series is titled, will narrate the strange occurrence that happens in Emma Averill’s life just weeks before her fortieth birthday. Emma suddenly stops sleeping, (resembling her mother who had the same experience at her age) and her life turns into a nightmare and she fears she would eventually encounter the same psychotic episode her mother underwent. As irregularities invade Emma’s routine life, she begins to question the happenings around her. With her mother hospitalized, her sister suddenly showing up in her town and her own constant feeling of being under watch, Emma starts to investigate the truth behind it all. The series is an adaptation of the thriller book of the same name by Sarah Pinborough, a popular thriller and fantasy novelist.
‘Insomnia’ is rumored to be directed by Borkur Sigthorsson, an emerging filmmaker and photographer with successes such as ‘Katla’ proving the artist’s stellar skills. Joining Borkur Sigthorsson in the crew is Sarah Pinborough herself, who will be taking up the role of the writer. Andy Harris and India Fowler will potentially join the crew as its producers.
Vicky McClure Joins the Cast
‘Insomnia’, which has supposedly begun its production this month is set to star none other than Vicky McClure, BBC’s ‘Kate Fleming’ from the suspense filled drama, ‘Line of Duty’. Possibly joining Vicky McClure in the cast are Tom Cullen, Smylie Bradwell, India Fowler, Leanne Best , Corrina Marlowe, Dominic Tighe, Jade Harrison and many more.
Since the original book was released last year, the series will feature an existing plot. Yet, potential changes from the book can be expected. The book was an instant best seller with The Washington Post naming it as “One of the Best Thrillers” out there, gaining recognition for its natural like focus on accurate childhood traumas that plague its bearer all the way to adulthood like the character Emma.
With the upcoming series being written by the author herself, audiences can expect an accurate rendition of the book. ‘Insomnia’, will be primarily shot in London and judging from the plot, the series will potentially be character driven for a majority of its parts. The series will also possibly focus on the real life perils of people who suffer from the disorder.
Thrillers based on disorders are often better understood than the usual ones as they are inspired from real life. Yet, the extent to which they are accurate, is the audience’s call. This upcoming series is a one of a kind as thriller book adaptations are in fact quite rare. What is in store for ‘Insomnia’ the series? When will it premiere?
