Far Cry is finally leaving the loading screen. The live-action television adaptation has begun filming, putting Ubisoft’s long-running shooter franchise into production under the direction of Fargo creator Noah Hawley.
DiscussingFilm reported the production update on X, describing the series as directed and co-created by Hawley. The start of filming moves the project forward less than a year after FX officially ordered it as an anthology series in November 2025.
The format is designed to match the games’ loose continuity: each season is expected to tell a new story with a new setting and cast, rather than directly reproducing one of the existing titles. The project’s announced creative team also includes Rob Mac, who is set to co-create and executive produce the series.
That gives the show room to roam.
Hawley has already framed the adaptation as an interpretation of what makes Far Cry distinctive, rather than a straightforward retelling of a particular game. The franchise has moved from tropical survival thriller to stories involving drug empires, authoritarian regimes, religious extremism and guerrilla warfare, giving the television version a broad collection of settings and conflicts to draw from without being locked to one protagonist.
The series arrives with a substantial game audience behind it. Ubisoft says Far Cry has reached more than 60 million unique players since its debut in 2004, when the original PC game introduced players to Jack Carver and a hostile tropical archipelago.
The most recent mainline entry, Far Cry 6, launched on October 7, 2021. Set on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara, the game cast players as a guerrilla fighter opposing dictator Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Ubisoft also used the game’s season pass to revisit earlier villains, including Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min and Joseph Seed.
Lizzy Caplan and Steve Buscemi have since joined the first season alongside Mac, though character details remain under wraps. FX has not announced a premiere date, episode count or the season’s setting.
The cameras are rolling; the release date is still somewhere off the map.
