A heart warming tale on an unlikely bond formed between a woman and a pet dog is currently under development by 3Dot Productions. When a woman suddenly loses her best friend, she is forced to foster the pet dog he has left behind. Her initial unfamiliarity develops into a strong bond between her and the dog wherein they connect through their mutual loss. Wanting to overcome her grief, she finds purpose in being there for the Great Dane that is still processing the inexplicable disappearance of its master. However problems seemingly begin to arise due to her apartment building’s prohibition of raising dogs. Despite being faced with the threat of eviction and disapproval from many, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog. In her isolated from the rest of the world, the woman finds closure in the dog’s care and forming an emotional connection with the dog. Despite the troubles, they are met with surprising rewards along the way.
Set to be directed by Scott McGehee & David Siegel, ‘The Friend’ is an adaptation of the 2018 novel with the same name by Sigrid Nunez which won the National Book Award for Fiction. The book was inspired from Nunez’s friends and possesses certain autobiographical elements. The upcoming film will be a direct adaptation of the book with Scott McGehee & David Siegel taking up the screenplay. The renowned duo has directed numerous hits such as ‘The Deep End’, ‘Uncertainty’ and ‘Montana Story’ wherein they served as the directors/ producers/ writers for the films.
Meet the Cast
‘The Friend’ will most likely have Naomi Watts, the renowned actress who has performed in a number of productions such as ‘Mulholland Drive’, ‘King Kong’, ‘The Watcher’, ‘Eastern Promises’ and ‘The Ring’ , in the lead role. The character that Watts will be playing in an unnamed narrator who is acquainted with her best friend’s dog, following his suicide. Liza Chasin, the producer of the ‘Johnny English’ film series, ‘French Kiss’, ‘Baby Driver’ and other popular entertainers will be joining Scott McGehee & David Siegel in the production team. Though the crew is yet to announce a premiere date, the film is almost certainly under development with an ongoing casting under SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement.
Films that depict strong bonds forged between humans and animals never fail to touch the audience’s hearts as they showcase the potential that humanity as a whole has, to be selfless. Dogs often reveal just how simple life can be with love alone as they are beings that do not posses ambition, greed, or other qualities that direct one towards failure and isolation.
