Another psychological thriller graces the OTT screens as the fan favorite Matt Smith is in talks to play the lead role in Amazon Prime’s upcoming series, titled ‘Buried’. Matt Smith gained immense popularity through his portrayal of ‘The Eleventh Doctor’ (a scientist who time travels across dimensions) in BBC’S ‘Doctor Who’. This was followed by his role as Prince Philip in Netflix’s ‘The Crown and Daemon Targaryen, in HBO’s prequel series to ‘Game of Thrones’ titled ‘House of the Dragon’.
In Amazon Prime’s ‘Buried’, Smith will play the role of a psychologist who can speak to spirits. Wayne Yip, an established artist who has worked in popular shows such as ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Misfits’, ‘Wheel of Time’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, will be directing this upcoming series.
Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee to Join Danny Brocklehurst in the Production Team
The founder of Red Production Company, Nicola Shindler and its primary producer Richard Fee will be producing this upcoming psychological thriller alongside Danny Brocklehurst, its writer. Red Production Company is known for its popular drama and thrillers, ‘The Stranger’, ‘Happy Valley’ and ‘Trust Me’ while Danny Brocklehurst is the recipient of prestigious accolades such as the The British Academy Film Awards. It is convincing enough to say that the trio would make a great team.
Although the cast of the series has not been finalized, the series is expected to commence shooting by December this year. Northern England is to serve as the primary location for ‘Buried’. So, Yorkshire villages, moors, calm coasts or the cities of Liverpool and Manchester might make an appearance in the upcoming series.
What to Expect?
The psychologist played by Matt Smith is entirely different from his role in ‘Doctor Who’ as the character communicates with the dead and hence possesses telepathic powers unlike The Doctor’s ability to time travel. The heavy involvement of spirits in ‘Buried’ will perhaps set an eerie tone which will be further enhanced by the landscapes of Northern England.
Show runner Matt Strevens’ work in ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’and ‘Doctor Who’ promises an entertaining cast, visuals and progression for ‘Buried’.
With thrillers reigning as the popular genre across OTTs, Amazon Prime’s ‘Buried’ promises a fresh take on the same by exploring the afterlife in a unique manner. Unlike shows such as ‘Ghost Whisperer’ (2005) which was more fantasy centered with the protagonist aiding the dead in finding peace, ‘Buried’ will be reportedly focussing more on the thriller aspect of the plot. In short, ‘Buried is expected to be a gripping and bewitching tale that calls for a compelling watch.
