On September 22, 1958, James and Dorothy Larkin had Joan at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania (some sources list her birth date as September 22, 1960, which is incorrect). She has 2 younger siblings, her father was an insurance salesman, and her mother was a secretary. It was a very church-attending, Sunday school-going family, although they were not that religious, also her family was Protestant. She attended Randolph Junior High and Wheaton High School.
