Atomic Blonde 2 is a forthcoming American action thriller movie based on the picture novel “The Coldest City” which was first published in 2012 that centres on a spy who has to locate a record of dual agents that are being bootlegged into the west on the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Directed by David Leitch and penned by Kurt Johnstad, the original film cast comprises Charlize Theron, John Goodman, James McAvoy, Til Schweiger, Sofia Boutella, Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones, and Roland Moller.
The upcoming action sequel will take place after the original film’s events in Berlin in 1989. When the first movie Atomic Blonde was released in 2017, way before the pandemic thing happened; the movie was a financial success that collected $100 million over an estimated budget of just $30 million.
Coming back to the sequel, four years after the original film, we’re amid a pandemic and instead of a theatrical release, the upcoming sequel will likely premiere exclusively on Netflix.
Without further ado, let’s delve into details about the Atomic 2 release date, cast and more.
Atomic Blonde 2 Release Date & Updates
Atomic Blonde 2 does not yet have a release date as of this writing. The movie might, nevertheless, be released in 2026, as per online sources. Since the movie has not yet started filming and is still in the development and screenplay stages, the 2026 release date is speculative.
After development and screenplay are finished, the movie would need to be given the go-ahead before production and filming begin, which would probably take two years. This increases the likelihood that the 2026 release date will occur. The continued strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA actors, however, may mean that the movie won’t be released until 2027.
Except for the news that Charlize Theron will be reprising her role as elite MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, the cast of Atomic Blonde 2 is completely unknown as of this writing. In addition, David Leitch, along with Theron and his spouse, will return to direct the picture.
It is projected that Atomic Blonde 2 will be released in 2026 or 2027. Do watch out for more updates!
The Upcoming Cast of Atomic Blonde 2: Who Will Be In It?
It’s confirmed that David Leitch and the main protagonist, Charlize Theron (as Lorraine Broughton) will be returning in the upcoming sequel, but it’s not known if the other characters who appeared in the first film will be reprising their roles.
As Leitch has stated previously, “I was just working on that movie. But at the end of the day, Kelly McCormick – my wife and producing partner – will also be involved. That’s how I got the job in the first place. We’ll see.”
If Charlize Theron returns in Atomic Blonde 2, it’s expected that she will have to work with new characters. But above all that, we need the sequel happening ASAP!
Atomic Blonde 2 Plot: What To Expect?
Atomic Blonde concluded on a note where Lorraine would want to depart on another adventure. There are many prospects for what could take place in the next sequel. However, plot details are under wraps and we’re itching to know what could happen to Lorriane.
Theron in an interview discloses that “I would like to tell the story of Lorraine. If we all agree, I will. She’s a great character and the world is very interesting and it looks at spies in a different way than other books do. It has lots of music and action.”
Charlize Theron also mentioned that her comeback will be packed with lots of action and uncertainty. We can expect some twists and turns in the sequel.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about Atomic Blonde 2, she explained:
“Unfortunately, the very sad truth of any film in the genre with a female lead, whey they don’t succeed, there is this mindset of, “Well, if it doesn’t work, you just don’t touch it again.” A lot of women don’t get a second chance, but when men make these movies and fail miserably, they get chance after chance after chance to go and explore that again. That doesn’t necessarily happen for women. It’s kind of like you get one chance, and if it doesn’t work… If you look at me, for instance, Fury Road came a good decade after Æon Flux, and there’s always been that voice in the back of my head that still somewhat responds to that. I’m still influenced by that, and it’s one thing that drives me. Unfortunately, we feel like the opportunity will be taken away from us in a heartbeat if we don’t succeed, but that is the truth. It’s not a very forgiving genre when it comes to women.”
As of now, the official release date and other important details are not available. But we will be sure to update this post over time with newer information. Till then, stay tuned!
