‘Barbie’ premiered last year in July and was an instant hit gaining both commercial and critical success. Starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, America Ferrera and more, the film centered on the famous Mattel Dolls and the events they encounter when in contact with the real world. The screenplay for the movie was composed by Greta Gerwing and Noah Baumbach with Greta Gerwig also serving as its director. The film also had an exceptionally good rating with many complimenting the director and cast members, primarily the leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. But, did you know that Gal Gadot was initially considered for the titular role in the film?
In a recent interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie discussed the process surrounding the making of the film and getting into the character of Barbie. Along with the discussions involving the meeting of the popular actress with Mattel’s CEO for pitching LuckyChap (Margot Robbie’s production company) for the movie, Barbie Dolls and their appearance, specificalities and how they are to be incorporated in to the script, approaching Greta Gerwig for the screenplay and direction and more, was the decision centered on casting. While Ryan Gosling was almost immediately thought of for portraying Ken with Margot Robbie describing his performance in the film as “greatest version” of the famed actor, Gal Gadot was seemingly considered ideal for the role of Barbie. The actress went on to say how both Greta Gerwig and herself were in search of the “Barbie Energy” and felt like Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman, Heart of Stone, Fast and Furious film series) fit the character description and personality perfectly well.
Gal Gadot had to allegedly turn down the role due to scheduling conflicts but expressed her love and support for Margot Robbie and her team in a recent interview with Flaunt. Reportedly several other actors and actresses were approached for the roles of Barbie and Ken before a decision was made. Nonetheless, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were the perfect casting for the characters and fans of the film also seem to agree on it. With their entertaining performance, the duo alongside other members of the cast managed to bring in a good film adaptation of the Dolls and its characters .
