Helmed and penned by Paul W.S. Anderson, “Monster Hunter” is a horror-action flick that was released on December 18, 2020. The film is based on the game series of the exact title by Capcom. It features Milla Jovovich as the lead character and her fifth series together with the helmer Anderson. Other supporting cast members comprise Tony Jaa, Tip Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Ron Perlman.
The film centers on Natalie Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her devoted warriors when they are transferred to a new world, where they have to fight off giant monsters with tremendous powers in order to survive.
Upon release, the film received mixed reviews and was estimated at an amount of $44 million worldwide against a budget of $60 million. It’s also worth mentioning that Monster Hunter was also nominated in the category of Outstanding Effects Simulations at the nineteenth Visual Effects Society Awards.
Here’s what we know about the sequel to Monster Hunter.
What is Monster Hunter about?
“While on a peril-laden mission to track a missing team of soldiers, hard-as-nails U.S. Army Ranger Captain Natalie Artemis and her elite brothers-in-arms find themselves transported to an alternate universe. There, trapped in a barren desert-world rife with formidable adversaries and subterranean sand-dwelling beasts, for the first time, Captain Artemis and her squad are shocked to discover that their otherwise destructive military weapons are now entirely inadequate to take down the enemy. But, unexpectedly, in their desperate battle for survival, the team stumbles upon a mysterious local huntsman whose superior combat skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the mighty creatures. Is there an escape from the prison realm? Above all, what does it take to become a fearless monster hunter?”

“I am always up for sequels,” Director Paul W.S. Anderson says. Will Monster Hunter 2 Happen?
The film Monster Hunter grossed over $441 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. However, it had received mixed reviews, scoring 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s monetary success suggests Sony Pictures Entertainment wants to make a sequel despite mixed reviews. However, it may not happen if the studio decides not to.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson said in an interview about a sequel: “I’m always up for sequels, especially if fans want them. I think Monster Hunter has more story to tell, and I’d want to explore it.” Let’s see what happens in the future.
Expect Bigger and Badder Monsters: Monster Hunters Season Two Expected Storyline
Though no Monster Hunter 2 movie updates suggest a story, the first film sets up a sequel. Artemis, The Hunter, and The Admiral attack a monster that crosses into the New World to finish Monster Hunter. The Monster Hunter mid-credits scene shows a mysterious creature sneaking on top of the Sky Tower, suggesting the character will be the villain in Monster Hunter 2. The sequel will center on the strange Tower and what Artemis and crew can learn from their crossovers.
Expect bigger and badder monsters and a fiercer Jovovich in Monster Hunter 2. In an interview with Total Film, Paul W.S. Anderson said a sequel will have more creatures. Anderson stated a month before Monster Hunter’s release, “I’ve spent 11 years on ‘Monster Hunter’ […] The game has hundreds of monsters. I can only utilize 5-6 in the film. I think we’ve merely scratched the surface of this enormous, exciting universe.”
Will there be a Monster Hunter 2?
As of now it’s uncertain if the filmmakers will return with a sequel since there’s been no concrete word till now.
Just about a month before the premiere of horror flick “Monster Hunter,” the helmer of the film Paul W.S. Anderson stated: “I’ve been working on ‘Monster Hunter’ for 11 years … There’s hundreds of monsters [in the game]. I can only use five or six of them in the movie. So it’s a big, fun world that I think we’ve only just started to scratch the surface of.”
Actress Milla Jovovich added, “Definitely, we would love to make another one. Hopefully people are going to love it because I know Paul would love to make a sequel. I mean, he’s already writing something … “
Unfortunately, the first movie “Monster Hunter” which came out on December 4, 2020, did not do well at the box office and miserably failed to impress the audience and critics. The movie had a budget of $60 million but it only earned just $45 million. But this doesn’t mean that this is the end of the franchise. Even if the first movie failed, there’s so much potential for the franchise to be redeemed as it has enough source materials. However, till now we haven’t heard a single word from the producers concerning a sequel to Monster Hunter. But we will be sure to update this section if we get any updates in the future. Don’t forget to check back with us again. Stay tuned for more! (updated 17/1/2024)
Monster Hunter Season 2 Expected Release Date: When will it air?
There is no release date for Monster Hunter 2 as of this writing. This is a result of the movie not being in development or announced.
The first Monster Hunter picture performed poorly at the box office when released in theaters during the COVID-19 epidemic. The first movie was similarly withdrawn from Chinese theaters due to negative reviews it received for its directing and plot as well as for allegedly having racist humor. Therefore, it is highly probable that the production company Constantin Films, who created Monster Hunter, would be unwilling to finance a follow-up.
On the other hand, Monster Hunter 2 will likely happen in the future. The film did well on streaming services, becoming one of the biggest premieres on Prime Video when it came out following its theatrical release. The movie’s ending hinted at the possibility of a sequel. Monster Hunter’s creators may determine that a sequel is necessary if the film does successfully on other streaming platforms.
Starring in Monster Hunter is Clifford Joseph “T.I.” Harris, Tony Jaa, Ron Perlman, Milla Jovovich, Meagan Good, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Hirona Yamazaki. Diego Boneta plays Diego.
Monster Hunter Season Two Plot: What can we expect?
The first movie unambiguously establishes a story for a sequel, yet no Monster Hunter 2 movie updates address a possible plot.
After Monster Hunter, Artemis, The Hunter, and The Admiral attack a monster that has ventured into the New World; furthermore, a dark figure can be seen creeping atop the Sky Tower in the Monster Hunter mid-credits scene. This hints that the character in question will return as the antagonist in Monster Hunter 2. Naturally, the strange Tower will be the main focus of the sequel, along with the lessons Artemis and company might take away from their adventures crossing over.
In Monster Hunter 2, you can anticipate even more furious behavior from Jovovich’s persona in addition to bigger, badder creatures. Furthermore, Paul W.S. Anderson acknowledged in a Total Film interview that a possible sequel would feature even more monsters than those in the original picture.
Anderson stated, “I’ve been working on ‘Monster Hunter’ for 11 years […]” one month before to the game’s release. The game contains hundreds of monsters. I’m limited to using five or six of them in the film. Thus, I believe we have only just begun to scrape the surface of this vast and exciting world.”

Monster Hunter season 1 Recap!
Monster Hunter sets up a sequel, but does the world want Monster Hunter 2?
Based on reactions to the latest blockbuster from writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson, it seems that critics are less than impressed. But general audiences seem to be enjoying their viewing experience.
Based on the eponymous Capcom video game, Monster Hunter released in December 2020. Milla Jovovich headlines the Monster Hunter cast. Natalie Artemis, U.S. Army Ranger leads a United Nations mission in the desert.
When her squad experiences a strange storm, they inadvertently crossover into a parallel world. A world that’s inhabited by extremely large beasts. There, Artemis links up with a native warrior (Tony Jaa as The Hunter). He is initially skeptical of the Ranger. But later learns to appreciate her skill set and personality.
Artemis eventually discovers that an ancient Sky Tower correlates with the changing weather. Still, she’s unsure how to return home to a world where giant monsters don’t affect her day-to-day work.
After a nasty fall, Artemis crosses over into her original realm. As a result, gets saved by her military comrades. Unfortunately for the soldiers, they get absolutely owned by one of the titular villains. From there, Anderson is less than subtle about the storyline for a potential sequel.
Will there be a season 3 of Monster Hunter?
The makers are yet to reveal anything about Monster Hunter season 3.
Monster Hunter 2 Plot: What to expect?
Plot details are unknown but the first film ended on a cliffhanger leaving an opening to the sequel. So it’s likely that the story will continue from where it was left off. This means that the hunters will have to face many new powerful monsters in the upcoming new movie.
