Jalen Brunson traded the hardwood for Hollywood on Monday night, appearing alongside Mariska Hargitay during the opening of the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Film Updates reported that the Knicks star “makes a cameo appearance” in the Emmys opener with Hargitay, who hosted the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. The telecast aired live on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
The cameo gives Brunson another New York connection on a night built around Hargitay’s ties to the city. The actress has played Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for more than two decades, while Brunson has become the face of the Knicks as the team’s captain.
Their friendship has already become a recurring piece of New York celebrity culture. Brunson has called Hargitay his favorite courtside celebrity, and she has supported him at Knicks games and during the team’s championship run. Their relationship was also documented when Brunson attended Hargitay’s Broadway production of Every Brilliant Thing in June.
Brunson arrives at the Emmys after the biggest season of his basketball career. The Knicks won their first NBA championship since 1973 during the 2025-26 season, posting a 13-game postseason winning streak and the best playoff point differential in league history, according to NBA.com’s season review.
The guard averaged 26 points, 6.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds during the regular season, then added Finals MVP honors as New York completed its long-awaited title run. His crossover into awards-show comedy comes just months after he was named the 36th team captain in Knicks history.
For Hargitay, the opening arrived during a major Emmy weekend of her own. She won two Creative Arts Emmy Awards for My Mom Jayne, her documentary about her mother, actor Jayne Mansfield, before taking the stage as the ceremony’s host. The Television Academy lists Hargitay as a three-time Emmy winner.
