When Stephen King began the composition of ‘Carrie’, he did not expect it to turnout as a masterpiece that would serve as an inspiration and an influence to the writers of contemporary horror fictions, even almost half a century after its release. Being published in 1974, ‘Carrie’ has since received several film adaptations such as the 1976 ‘Carrie’ directed by Brian De Palma, ‘The Rage : Carrie 2’ released in 1999, the 2002 ‘Carrie’ and the most recent ‘Carrie’, which premiered on October 18, 2013 and was directed by Kimberly Pierce. All these films had similar plot lines and followed Stephen King’s original book.
‘Carrie’ was known for its portrayal of the titular character as a repressed victim of fanaticism that was imposed onto her through her family’s extreme religious beliefs. It was also unique for its usage of supernatural powers that fit effortlessly well with the protagonist’s inner turmoil. Currently a new remake of the cult classic with the same title, is reportedly under production by Screen Gems, an American production company and is set to star Hunter Schafer, in the titular role.
Plot of ‘Carrie’
The original plot of the 1974 book followed Carrie, a high schooler who is the object of constant bullying and mockery by her classmates and her mother, a fanatic Christian. However, unbeknownst to others, she possesses telekinetic powers that she secretly practices. What follows is a series of events that finally lead to Carrie’s mental outburst. Upon being nominated as the prom queen, Carrie is bullied one last time wherein pig blood is thrown onto her. Having had enough, Carrie goes on a killing spree starting with her bullies all the way to her mother who says she has been possessed by the Devil. The book ends with Carrie succumbing to her wounds from the stabs that she encountered from her mother.
The upcoming feature film will focus on the same plot wherein Carrie’s ability has been both a power and a problem as she has never managed to fully control it. When she becomes the recipient of a sudden act of kindness, Carrie starts to hope again for a normal life without anymore of her classmates’ vicious taunts. However, the occurrence of a cruel prank turns her gift into a weapon of horror, impacting the town as a whole.
