gnash, born Garrett Charles Nash in Los Angeles, landed in the mid-2010s as one of the era’s definitive bedroom-pop exports. “i hate u, i love u,” his 2016 collaboration with Olivia O’Brien, climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and turned a sparse, finger-picked breakup loop into a multi-platinum streaming staple. Support slots on that circuit function as auditions with a paying audience attached. A strong opening set in front of a Toronto crowd can do more for an emerging act’s Ontario numbers than a headline club show, which is why Canadian promoters tend to pair touring headliners with regional names rather than importing full packages from the U.S.
Toronto remains the anchor of most North American routings that cross the border at all, and Ontario dates are frequently the only Canadian stop on a run. That gives local openers outsized exposure relative to their billing — a 25-minute set in front of a room that already bought tickets.
