Buddy the Unicorn has found a way to make his mark permanent — and it does not involve another bloody children’s-TV nightmare. Hundreds of fans received free tattoos of the orange mascot at an event hosted by the character, according to a Monday, September 14, 2026 post from DiscussingFilm on X.

The gathering turns a deliberately ridiculous horror icon into something closer to a traveling pop-culture phenomenon. Fans did not just pose for photos or pick up a T-shirt; they left with Buddy inked onto their skin, an unusually durable form of devotion for a film released less than three weeks ago.

That timing matters. Buddy opened in U.S. theaters on August 28 through Roadside Attractions and Saban Films after premiering in the Midnight section of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. The film comes from Casper Kelly, creator of the viral Adult Swim short “Too Many Cooks,” and stars Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn and Topher Grace, with Keegan-Michael Key providing Buddy’s voice. In the movie, Buddy is not a cuddly mascot in the conventional sense. He is the host of “It’s Buddy!,” a retro children’s program whose bright colors, simple songs and oversized smiles conceal a much darker story. The film follows children pulled into the show’s warped television world, while Milioti’s character investigates the disappearance of a child connected to Buddy’s past. The campaign has treated Buddy less like a fictional character and more like a creature with his own agenda. Earlier in September, the mascot appeared outside Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights, where staff reportedly ordered him to leave because costumes were not allowed. Buddy’s response — “but i’m a unicorn” — became another chapter in the character’s commitment to never acknowledging the person inside the suit. Now there are tattoos.

The stunt also arrives as the indie horror film has performed well beyond the usual expectations for a small genre release. TheWrap reported that Buddy opened with $5.3 million on August 28 and followed with $5.7 million during the Friday-to-Sunday portion of Labor Day weekend. The film’s second-weekend increase helped push the movie into the conversation as an early breakout rather than a one-week curiosity. ([thewrap.com](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/box-office/buddy-horror-film-indie-box-office-hit/?utm_source=openai))

That momentum has been powered by the contrast at the center of the project: a creature designed to look safe enough for preschool television, repurposed as the face of a horror comedy. Buddy’s orange fur, purple heart and relentlessly cheerful presentation recall the visual language of 1990s children’s programming, while the film turns that familiarity into a source of unease. Free tattoos take that joke one step further. Buddy is no longer merely invading a television show, a movie theater or a theme-park parking structure. He is going home with the audience — permanently, and presumably without asking permission.
