Fifty- Fifty Films and Sony Pictures are collaborating for a new project, a feature film set in the future themed in sins and retribution. Titled as, ‘Barbarella’, the film will take place in the year 40,000 wherein astronaut Barbarella lands on the frozen planet called Lythion after floating peacefully in zero- gravity. Her goal is simple, find the renowned scientist Durand Durand in the City of Night, Sogo. However, the place has a slight complication. In Soho, a new sin is invented every hour and this occurrence will make it difficult for Barbarella to find the scientist. Along the way, she encounters objects such as the Excessive Machine, a supposed sex organ on which an expert artist of the keyboard (in this case, Durand Durand himself) can kill a victim through pleasure, a lesbian queen who can make her fantasies take form and turn them into a reality in her Chamber of Dreams, and a group of ladies smoking a hookah which can dispense the “Essence of Man” when a man is put in its glass globe. The rest of the film will follow how Barbarella attempts to overcome these hurdles in her pursuit to reach Durand Durand.
The upcoming feature film is rumored to be directed by Edgar Wright. Edgar Wright is a known filmmaker whose works include, ‘Baby Driver’ which premiered in 2017, ‘Shaun of the Dead’ starring himself alongside Simon Pegg, Kate Ashfield and Nick Frost, ‘The World’s End’ a sci- fi comedy and ‘Attack the Block’ starring John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Jodie Whittaker and more.
Sydney Sweeney to Take the Lead Role
‘Barbarella’ with its chilling plot is supposedly being headed by Sydney Sweeney in the cast. The actress gained massive international popularity from her portrayal of Cassie in HBO’s ‘Euphoria’. Her other works include, ‘The Voyeurs’ which premiered in 2021 as a thriller, ‘The White Lotus’ starring Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza and Theo James, to name a few, ‘Everything Sucks’ which premiered in 2018 and more.
Jonathan Davino will be joining the crew for ‘Barbarella’ as its producer. Jonathan Davino is an emerging producer who will be heading the crew for the upcoming feature film. Fifty- Fifty Films and Sony Pictures , the two companies developing ‘Barbarella’ are established production companies.
