Sherlock is a British mystery/crime drama television series based on the detective stories ‘Sherlock Holmes’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. The show’s season 5 is a sequel to the Sherlock film.
The series four seasons aired on BBC in 2010 became a massive hit on Netflix. In 2017, the last episode was aired, and the latest episode was titled “The Final Problem.”
Fans worldwide couldn’t get enough of the modern and intelligent detective series set in the present period, while the special features a Victorian-era story matching the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Fans are also anxious to know if they could get a Sherlock season 5 soon? To learn more about the upcoming season, here’s what you need to know.
Will Sherlock Return with Season 5?
It’s unclear whether Sherlok will be back with the fifth season. However, Benedict Cumberbatch revealed to Collider in 2021 about the odds of Sherlock Season 5. Cumberbatch disclosed to fans that the series might take a while to launch or “maybe it could be a film rather than the series.”
He added “I’m the worst person to ask this because I never say never, obviously. But I don’t know. And I’m the worst person to ask because my slate’s pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin [Freeman, Watson] and all the other key players involved. So, who knows? Maybe one day, if the script’s right. And I say ‘the script,’ maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now.”
Mark Gatiss also stated: “Our original intention of the series was to go back to the beginning and see them as younger men and… restore it to its factory settings. But I think what’s actually happened is that we have now done the story of how the Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson that we have always known, how they became those men. It’s actually really a backstory.”
So whether or not there will be Sherlock Season 5, Moffat expressed, “If this was the last time – we’re not planning it, but it might be, it’s possible – we could end it there. We couldn’t have ended it on any of the previous series because they always ended up with whopping great cliffhangers.”
“I want another Sherlock season. I think that character has so much potential,” actor Benedict Cumberbatch said, suggesting a renewal!
Sherlock’s fifth season has not been announced by the cast or producers, but actor Benedict Cumberbatch suggested a renewal, and we just can’t wait omgg!
Sherlock, a BBC favorite, consistently draws high viewership, with its fourth season being the highest-rated. It goes without saying that the audiences want a fifth season, and well, so do the cast and creators. In an interview, Benedict Cumberbatch declared, “I want another Sherlock season. I think that character has so much potential.”
However, some obstacles could impede a fifth Sherlock season. You see, the cast and crew scheduling is difficult. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are busy actors, making it hard to schedule a Sherlock season. Besides, the series’ artistic direction could be another issue. Sherlock’s creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss left, and now there needs to be a new creative team before a fifth season can be made.
At the time of this writing, Sherlock’s fifth season renewal is uncertain, even though the show is highly popular. However, we anticipate that Sherlock will return for its fifth season because there’s oh-so-much that’s yet to be covered. If BBC can resolve these scheduling and creative issues (which we reckon they definitely will), Sherlock season 5 will return. Please stay connected with us for future updates!
Sherlock Season 5 Release Date
The premiere date of Sherlock season 5 is still not known. I guess we have to dig for more information or maybe wait for further announcements. Still, it is a matter of math and investigation. As mentioned, the first episode aired in 2010, and the next two aired within two years. The timeline is a bit messed up, and there is no consistency, but it gives you a rough idea of the show’s production schedule at best.
Nevertheless, in 2016, only one special feature was aired, and season 4 didn’t get a release until 2017.
In 2018 in an interview with Radio Times, Steven Moffat, co-creator of the series, said that the release date for a possible upcoming season is doubtful.
“We don’t have an immediate plan, but I would be surprised, given our collective enthusiasm, if we didn’t do it again,” Moffat said. “When I don’t know. I think maybe it’s time for a longer break, and I Don’t know,” Moffat said.
It Isn’t the best news for the fans waiting for the return of Sherlock Season 5. But anything can happen. We love surprises.
Cast of Sherlock Season 5
Sherlock ain’t Sherlock if there is no Benedict Cumberbatch. So, obviously, we expect him to return as Holmes, and so is Martin Freeman as Watson. Other cast members that will likely return are Gatiss as Mycroft, Holmes’ older brother. Apart from this trio, no details were revealed about other cast members.
(updated sept 2023)
However, there are high chances that there will be new cast members additions and we’ll get to see new villains in the series.

Sherlock Season 5 Plot
The Sherlock Holmes stories will probably inspire the series plot, but no one knows for sure what’s going on in Sherlock’s head. The series is known for its witty and unpredictable storyline.
The heavily modernized and reimagined episodes of the series Sherlock treat Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. Largely as rough inspiration and fodder for copious Easter eggs, the plot gives the whole showis a welcome combination of unpredictability and familiarity.
For every nod to the Reichenbach Falls and “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” Sherlock is just as liable to turn a story’s premise on its head. Even introduce a brand-new concept, like Eurus Holmes.
There are still many Sherlock Holmes stories. However, as always, it’s anyone’s guess how Sherlock will treat them. We do know, however, that Gatiss has expressed interest in adapting “The Red-Headed League,” a complex heist short story (via Digital Spy).
If this plan is still in motion, the case’s villain, noted criminal mastermind John Clay, might very well give a worthy challenge to the protagonists.
