When their relationship ends, she returns to the US and attempts to reestablish her journalism career as a newly single woman. However, her new employer assigns her to write obituaries and she starts encountering apparitions of the people whose obituaries she is composing. These ghosts can only be seen and heard by Nell and they initiate conversations with her while offering her advice on how to reconstruct her life. Additionally, they assist her in writing their obituaries by sharing their personal experiences and after publishing their obituaries, they vanish.
