She was indicted on the 4th of February in 2015 and she was arraigned the following day in New Bedford Juvenile Court in Taunton, Massachusetts on the charge of involuntary manslaughter. There was enough evidence of her having “wantonly and recklessly” encouraged his suicide. Since she was 17 years old, she was charged with youthful offender rather than a juvenile. In February 2019, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that she had acted with Criminal Intent and she eventually was forced to serve a 15-month sentence.

Conrad Roy was an American teenager who died from suicide at the age of 18. He was dating Michelle Carter then, and she encouraged his suicidal thoughts through text. In the weeks that led up to his suicide, he exchanged many texts with her, and she encouraged him. He was an honour roll student who struggled with depression and social anxiety. On the day he passed away, they found a text from Michelle Carter saying, “You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it, but u never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action.”
Roy and Carter “were each other’s confidante,” Erin Lee Carr, director of the 2019 HBO documentary I Love You, Now Die, told E! News last summer. “I think that you consistently see Michelle Carter reaching out to people for support, and Conrad was sort of like this friend that was always in her ear. They communicated so much at these crazy intense intervals, and they shared things that they had not shared with others.
