Louis Hofmann Joins Bella Ramsey in Period Drama ‘Monstrous Beauty’
Louis Hofmann, known for his role in Netflix’s hit series ‘Dark’ and the Oscar-nominated feature ‘Land Of Mine’, is set to join Bella Ramsey in the upcoming period drama ‘Monstrous Beauty.
‘Monstrous Beauty’ is a unique project written and directed by Romola Garai, who is known for her work on ‘Atonement’ and ‘The Hour’. The film takes us back to the court of King Charles II, where Bella Ramsey will play Barbara Field, an aspiring playwright entirely covered in hair due to a rare condition. Ramsey, who gained fame as the precocious Lady of Bear Island in ‘Game Of Thrones’, is set to play a role that promises to be memorable
The story combines real historical characters with fiction. Ramsey’s character, Barbara, aspires to become a playwright under the tutelage of Nell Gwyn, portrayed by Oscar nominee Ruth Negga. Fiona Shaw, known for her role in ‘Killing Eve’, will play Aphra Behn, the first-ever published female playwright in history. Dominic West will portray King Charles II45.
The film is set to start shooting in September, with Matthew James Wilkinson of ‘Yesterday’ fame producing for Stigma Films. The film is being talked up to buyers in the run-up to next month’s Cannes market6.
Hofmann, one of Germany’s most in-demand young actors, has a series of notable credits to his name. He won a Best Supporting Actor award at the Bodil Awards in 2016 for his role in ‘Land Of Mine’. Hofmann will next be seen in Netflix’s anticipated limited series ‘All The Light We Cannot See’, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. He is also set to star in the Apple TV+ series ‘Masters Of The Air’, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks
Romola Garai, the writer-director of the film, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “I am beyond thrilled to be bringing this script, that I love so much and that has lived within me for so many years, to the screen. Barbara’s deep need to express herself and to be seen and appreciated by others… is all of ours; I am over the moon and truly humbled to be making this film with such an incredible roster of talent – they have responded with such intelligence, sensitivity and love to Barbara and her story”8.
