Canada’s first sport is hockey, and that’s unlikely to ever change, but as a nation of sports lovers, Canadians still have room in their hearts for other team games. The rising popularity of the NFL is evidence of this, and crucially, it’s the presence of homegrown stars in top teams south of the border that’s catalyzing interest in American Football at the moment. Here’s why Canada-born players matter for growing the NFL’s audience here.

Everyone Loves a Hometown Hero

Rooting for someone who’s made it as a professional athlete but used to walk the same streets as you in your hometown is a process we all love, and communities across Canada can do just that with the raft of recent talent that have broken through into the NFL. Jevon Holland’s signing to the New York Giants on a $45.3 million deal in 2025 and Chuba Hubbard’s career at the Carolina Panthers have shown that there are Canadian players who can get drafted and carve out solid careers spanning several years. Fans back home in Coquitlam and Edmonton, respectively, have a reason to cheer on players whose backgrounds are the same as theirs, and this connection defies the kind of geographic realities or regional rivalries that might otherwise have determined which NFL sides Canadians choose to support.

With this growing audience comes increased interest in NFL-based sports betting, and that’s also an activity which has been given a boost in recent years. Canadian bettors looking for an NFL sportsbook can easily wager on teams where their hometown heroes play, deepening their connection to sides that might be hundreds or thousands of miles away.

More Representation Means More Participation

Having increased representation of Canadian-born players in the NFL is good for viewership of the sport as well as for grassroots involvement in it. Playing football at high school is now a much more common pastime, and it’s a self-perpetuating process, whereby the more Canadians who get drafted, the more youngsters will get into the sport, leading to even better representation at a professional level in the years to come.

Increasingly Ubiquitous Media Coverage

The NFL’s momentum in Canada is not just driven by fans tuning into games featuring Canadian players, but by the fact that the media coverage of the sport has increased for the very same reason. And when TV shows, newspaper columnists, podcasters and commentators in every context are talking about football more frequently, that naturally feeds the conversations had by fans and draws in increased viewership numbers when game days do arrive.

The CFL Effect

It’s impossible to talk about the NFL’s popularity in Canada without also mentioning the CFL. While this league is technically a rival to its much larger American cousin, it’s a rivalry that doesn’t matter much to fans, because if you love a certain type of sport, then you aren’t going to limit yourself to just one team or league. So, with all these reasons for Canadians to keep more than a passing eye on the NFL, the impact that players make on its popularity has to be recognized, wherever they ply their trade.
