Asagiri had the idea set in his head to bring back all the late and famous authors and poets as supernatural beings. Sango Harukawa, an anime illustrator, was able to create character designs for Atsushi and Dazai which helped him write the story and create the world of Bungou Stray Dogs.
Kafka says that he wanted the characters Atsushi and Dazai to contrast each other with some minor revisions made in the process of creating the series. Asagiri wrote the main manga series, along with the light novels aimed at casual readers.
Across 22 volumes the series contains more than 90 chapters with 4 chapters averaging per volume. Bungou Stray Dogs has also been published in the west by Yen Press, the first volume of which was released in December 2016.
