In this Era of refashioning movements, themes, narratives and art forms, RAI brings to the nostalgic fans of Period pieces a true treat in the form of the upcoming TV series titled, ‘Belcanto’.
Produced by Mariano Di Nardo and Antonio Manca, ‘Belcanto’ narrates the story two sisters, the 14 – year old Carolina and the 17 – year old Antonia with a passion for singing who with their mother, Maria, escape their violent father and try to earn a living in the vibrant city of Milan. Set in 1768, the drama focuses on how the dynamic of the family change when a music teacher discovers that Carolina is the true talent in the family.
Why 1768?
The late 1700s were known for the Industrial Revolution alongside Enlightenment’s philosophies and Italy was no stranger to these developments. Starved of intellectual and creative liberty following the Renaissance, 1760s saw the revival of many art forms that were considered lost, with Opera being a primary one. Thus, it is only fitting that the fictional story is set in this time period.
