Classics strike again as Netflix brings an exciting new take on the Gothic novel, ‘Frankenstein’, by Mary Shelly with Andrew Garfield and Oscar Isaac reportedly in talks for the lead roles. The upcoming feature film, titled ‘Dr. Frankenstein’ is reportedly set after the events of the original story and will provide a new narrative to the cult classic.
The film genius Guillermo del Toro is expected to take up the direction of ‘Dr. Frankenstein’ alongside producers Gary Ungar and J. Miles Dale. Toro, who has gifted Hollywood with a number of gems such as the ‘Pacific Rim’ (2013), ‘The Shape of Water’ (2017), ‘Hellboy’ (2004), ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ (2011) and so on, will reportedly also work as the film’s writer.
Plot, Cast and More
‘Dr. Frankenstein’ will focus on Dr. Pretorious and his quest to find Frankenstein’s monster, in order to continue the experiments of the Doctor. With the setting of Eastern Europe much like the original novel, a large part of the shooting will presumably be shot in Scotland.
Mia Goth, the celebrated star from Amazon Prime’s ‘Emma’ 2020 is rumored to join Andrew Garfield and Oscar Isaac for the upcoming Netflix movie. At present, the casting is not complete and hence an accurate information surrounding the film’s production cannot be ascertained. However, as per our sources, the film will soon commence its shooting, possibly in the beginning of 2024.
Unlike the themes of fatherhood, technology’s implication and ambition that ran in the 1818 book, the upcoming film will explore the mystery surrounding the existence of Frankenstein’s monster that is presumed to have died about forty years before the events of the film.
Garfield and Isaac are well known for their contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider Man in the ‘Amazing Spider Man’ series and as Marc Spector/ Steven Grant in ‘Moon Knight’ respectively. Garfield is also known for his performance in ‘Tick Tick Boom’ and ‘The Social Network’. At the same time Isaac is an established actor in sci-fi and fantasy themed movies such as ‘Dune’ (2021) and ‘X- Men: Apocalypse’ (2016).
Frankenstein was a novelty at the time of its composition due to its plot, the themes it addressed, and its ability to make its readers sympathize with a monster who was a victim of his creator’s ambitions. In actuality, it was the novel that popularized and introduced Gothic fiction. ‘Dr. Frankenstein’ with its new narrative might perhaps solidify the emotion associated with the fictional character and help the fans of the original classic understand the new guises of Frankenstein that has never been explored before.
