12 Monkeys season five has officially been canceled, and while there were talks regarding a fifth season, the makers have axed off the series. The show’s scope has grown significantly over the course of its four seasons, so it was only right that it could return for a final season that included 11 episodes and a large, 2-hour conclusion.

According to Chris McCumber, president of NBCUniversal Cable Networks, renewing the show for its final season was an easy decision for the network. “It’s grown into a world well beyond the original film, and after seeing the creative strength of Season 3, we couldn’t wait to pick it up for a fourth season.”

The actress who portrays Jennifer Goines, Emily Hampshire, revealed in an Uproxx interview that a crucial moment in Jennifer’s journey will occur at the very end. She made a suggestion that, without giving too much away, viewers will be thrilled with the conclusion.

“There’s something like [an end credits scene] with Jennifer that you see at the end,” she revealed. “[I]t goes all the way back to Season 1 and you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ It’s the most satisfying thing, and it’s been very hard for me not to say something about it.”

12 Monkeys Season Five Plot: What to expect?

As the series has officially been canceled about 12 Monkeys season five, there won’t be a plot continuation.

The show revolves around a team of “Project Splinter” scientists in the year 2043, commanded by physicist Katarina Jones (Barbara Sukowa), enlist scavenger James Cole (Aaron Stanford) to travel back in time to 2015 in order to stop the mysterious “Army of the 12 Monkeys” from unleashing a fatal virus there.

According to Cole’s first timeline, a virus (the Kalavirus) killed seven billion people in the year 2017, and future virus mutations would eventually cause the extinction of the human species.

The brilliant virologist Dr. Cassandra “Cassie” Railly (Amanda Schull), who Cole meets and enlists the assistance of in the past, is brought together with him because of the viral outbreak. In the future, Katarina Jones finds a recording in which Cassie mentions Cole, which prompts her to choose Cole for the mission.
