BBC’s legal drama ‘The Split’ created by Abi Morgan and also co-wrote by Morgan alongside Jane Eden, Louise Ironside, and Matt Jones might have been over for good as the program no longer have any plans to return with season 4 of The Split.

The series was helmed by Jessica Hobbs. It stars Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan, Fiona Button, Annabel Scholey, Barry Atsma, and Deborah Findlay. For four years, the series spanned a total of three seasons and has an overall 18 episodes.

The Split Season 4 Release Date: Is it Renewed or Canceled?

The BBC officially declared in 2021 that the popular series 3rd season would be the final season, and would complete proceedings with “the most dramatic and heart-breaking series to date”. So there is no air date for The Split season four.

Series creator Abi Morgan has talked about her decision to finish the hit legal drama series with its third season rather than resume the story in the 4th season.

Morgan said: “It was always the plan and in fact, I don’t think I’m saying anything out of turn here, the BBC would have loved us to have gone on really. But I always conceived it as three.

“The Split was meant to be about the legacy of the split, and season 1 is really Hannah reflecting on her childhood and the legacy of her parent’s divorce, and then 2 was about the affair. And then 3 is really about Hannah facing her own divorce. So I’d always considered it as three.

“And I love writing for those characters and I’m sure I will kick myself again and again. But I also feel like, how many times can you bring people back together and split them up and bring them back together? It would become a different show.”

Morgan was asked whether the network was upset to see the program conclude, Morgan stated: “Actually, I think more than anything, they’re excited about the next thing and the next genesis of whatever that will be. But also, we’re in this amazing era of television and I feel so lucky to have got five, or six years working with that kind of constellation of actors.

“And there is an alchemy that you search for in a cast that you don’t always get. There’s always one person who slightly drives you up the wall or someone else who doesn’t like being in the show, but this was a unique experience,” she added. “You can feel the energy in that show, they do genuinely get on. It is like a family. I know people say those trite, twee things, but it really is. And so I think that was great, I hope that translates to an audience.”

What Happened in Season 3 of The Split?

Fans of the show waited for about two years to finally witness whether their favorite longtime couple will make amends and give their love another chance and since we will not be putting down any spoilers here, you might have to find it yourself if you haven’t watched the series yet.

Speaking to The Big RT, series star Nicola Walker who plays Hannah Stern was asked about her thoughts on the show coming to an end. She explained: “It’s a definite conclusion that Abi’s taking you to in the story so things are dropping away episode after episode.”

She continued: “There’s a sense of letting go in the narrative… it’s not a vague ending. It’s very clear for all of the characters where they are by the end.”

Can We Expect a Spin-off in The Future?

The third season may be the final season of The Split, but can we still look forward to a spin-off? “I think if you’ve spoken to any of us, we’d all give the same answer. We’ll do whatever Abi Morgan wants us to do. We’re there. We’re absolutely there,” said Nicola Walker while speaking to The Big RT.

“The fact that our mother is the woman this year who’s having the most successful relationship, I think is incredible. So maybe we could be revisited in years and see what the different sisters are up to. Maybe they’ll all be having the most amazing professional and personal lives.”

No Season 4 for The Split

Sadly, The Split ended with its third season. And as mentioned before it was announced back in 2021 by the series creator that the third season was the last and no further season was planned. Hence, a fourth season of the legal drama will not happen in the future. The series officially came to an end airing its last episode on May 9, 2022.

In a March 2023 interview, creator and showrunner Abi Morgan indicated she would consider a fourth season if there was more story to tell.

“I think it’s important to know when to stop a show,” she remarked. I don’t want to talk if there’s nothing new. I also think The Split might go a long time because there are so many stories to tell about these characters but we did end it on a pretty good note.”

If at all season 4 were to happen, UK broadcaster BBC One will decide whether to continue The Split for a fourth season.

All three seasons of The Split are available to watch on Prime Video, Philo, Hulu, and Spectrum TV.

(updated 26 sept 2023)

If Split season 4 were to happen, what can we expect?

The Split’s first season begins with turmoil as the Defoe family confronts their past once their father returns after 30 years. After meeting her soulmate, Hannah changes her life. The Split season 2 returns the Defoe family to Noble & Hale Hale, a newly integrated law business.

The Split finale surprised viewers again. Instead of a happy conclusion, Hannah divorces her spouse. In the season 3 finale, Hannah and Nathan split and share custody of their three children.

No Split season 4 narrative is in production. Despite the unsettling ending, the series makers have opted not to make a new season. Although the show is popular, viewers are disappointed that there will be no new story.
