A sequel to the ‘Spinal Tap’ film series is reportedly under production and it is plausible that Rob Reiner will be returning in his popular role of Marty DiBergi. Rob Reiner is an established artist who is primarily known as an actor and filmmaker. His works include, ‘Stand by Me’ which premiered in 1986, ‘The Bucket List’ an adventure comedy, ‘Flipped’ which premiered in 2010 and more. ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ the first film is the ‘Spinal Tap’ film series premiered in 1984 as a mockumentary and starred Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and more while Rob Reiner also served as the film’s director. Its sequel titled as, ‘The Return of Spinal Tap’ premiered in 1992, this time with Jim Di Bergi directing the film. Now, almost 3 decades later, a new sequel titled as, ‘Spinal Tap 2’ is underway.
The production for ‘Spinal Tap 2’ is supposedly being taken up under Castle Rock Entertainment, a known production company. Some of the works under Castle Rock Entertainment include, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ which premiered in 1994, ‘Before Sunrise’ which was directed by Richard Linklater, ‘Kangaroo Jack’ an adventure comedy, ‘Friends with Benefits’ a romantic comedy and more. The upcoming feature film will possibly commence its filming in 2024 with New Orleans serving as its primary location.

The original film followed filmmaker Marty DiBerg who is a fan of the popular British heavy metal band ‘Spine Tap’ and makes a documentary based on their tour. Not much is known regarding the plot of ‘Spine Tap 2’, yet, the upcoming feature film will potentially have Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest returning alongside Rob Reiner as David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel respectively, the nucleus of England’s loudest and sauciest heavy metal band. Michael McKean is a known actor/ comedian whose works include, ‘Better Call Saul’ which ran for 6 seasons, ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ which premiered in 1987, ‘For Your Consideration’ a dramdey and more. Harry Shearer is another established artist whose works include, ‘The Simpsons’ a sitcom, ‘Waiting for Guffman’ a musical comedy and more. Christopher Guest is another recognized artist who has worked alongside Michael McKean and Harry Shearer for a number of works such as, ‘For Your Consideration’, ‘A Mighty Wind’ and more.
Castle Rock Entertainment will potentially be joined by The Kennedy/Marshall Company and CAA Media Finance for the development of the upcoming feature film.
The producers for the upcoming project is rumored to include, Frank Marshall, Matthew George, Jonathan Fuhrman and Hernan Narea. Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest will most likely compose the screenplay for ‘Spinal Tap 2’ while Rob Reiner will possibly be reprising his role as the director of the upcoming feature film.
