Video games adaptation into movies are a risky call, it’s often hit or miss with the viewers. But quite, fortunately, Sonic the Hedgehog defied all odds and all those involved in the production, the ever-popular SEGA character’s theatrical debut in 2020 proved to be a massive hit and it managed to make over a whopping amount of $300 million worldwide even though cinemas were badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. It was well-received by the audiences and Sonic the Hedgehog became one of the biggest grossing movies of all time that year.
In May 2020, it was officially announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had been given the green light, and it was later confirmed that it would release in 2022.
The official Twitter account of Paramount tweeted in 2021 that said: “Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious.”
The director Jeff Fowler and scriptwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller reunited for the upcoming sequel. Before the sequel was even confirmed, Fowler told Digital Spy that he had been planning for a long time for another sequel when making the previous movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 release date
It’s already confirmed that the sequel will land in theatres on April 8, 2022, in the UK and US.
Director Fowler earlier announced that the production officially began on March 16, 2021, before announcing that filming for the sequel had wrapped in Vancouver on May 13, 2021.
He wrote, “That’s a wrap in Vancouver! Thank you to all the amazing cast/crew in this city… so much incredible talent helping make #SonicMovie2 truly special (and spoiler alert… EPIC!).”
Soon after the announcement, the last filming for the sequel wrapped in Hawaii on June 25, 2021.
If they continue to keep up with this pace, it seems very likely that we’ll get the release in April 2022.

Miles “Tails” Prower, Sonic’s sidekick, will appear in the film as well. The voice behind is still not known or it could be Colleen O’Shaughnessy who previously lent his voice in the mid-credits scene of the first movie.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 plot details
No further details on the plot have been revealed yet but we finally got the first plot synopsis from an unknown source which happens to be a confirmed story outline for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but we’re not so sure about the confirmation part but anyway here it is;
The synopsis reads, “After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilisations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”
However, the synopsis hasn’t been officially confirmed by Paramount as of now but it appears to be quite authentic.
