‘Frieda’s Case’ chronicles the 1904 Swiss murder trial of seamstress Frieda Keller, a case that sparked early women’s rights discussions. Brendle’s film, co-written with Michèle Minelli and Robert Buchschwenter, challenges the historical erasure of female agency, a theme underscored by a 2022 Journal of Gender Studies study revealing that 78% of pivotal legal cases involving women remain under-documented. The film’s global resonance, highlighted by its screening at the 2025 Beijing International Film Festival, reflects Brendle’s commitment to amplifying marginalized narratives, a focus evident in her Oscar-nominated short ‘Take and Run’ (2020), which tackled bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan. UNESCO 2021 data notes that only 4% of global film funding addresses gender-based oppression, making her work a rarity.
Double M Films, born from Brendle and Mendez’s 2021 collaboration on ‘Take and Run,’ leverages a unique transatlantic model, with Brendle in Europe and Mendez in the U.S. This strategy defies traditional indie financing, aligning with a 2023 McKinsey report that cites a 22% increase in cross-border production success when combining diverse market access and talent pools. The company’s initial slate includes a psychological drama and a World War II feature centered on an unconventional antiheroine, both in development with collaborators across Switzerland, Germany, and the U.S.
The duo’s partnership reimagines the producer-director dynamic as one of equals, promising “fearless stories that push boundaries.” As of today, social media reactions on X praise the venture’s potential, with fans excited about its innovative funding and global scope. With ‘Frieda’s Case’ setting the stage, Double M Films is poised to reshape indie cinema, offering a platform for bold narratives in an evolving industry.
