What is El Chapo about?

On 12th May 2017, Univision announced that the El Chapo series would be commissioned for a second season. El Chapo Season 2 was released on 17th September 2017. The giant streamer launched all nine episodes of the first season on 16th June 2017 and the second season was launched on 15th December 2017, and the third and final season of the series which was released on 9th July 2018 on Univision, and on 27th July 2018 on Netflix. The series stars Marco de la O as (Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán), Humberto Busto (as Conrado Higuera Sol “Don Sol”) Alejandro Aguilar (as Toño), Rodrigo Abed (as Amado Carrillo Fuentes), Luis Fernando Peña (as Armando “Rayo” López), Juan Carlos Olivas (as Héctor Luis Palma Salazar), Antonio de la Vega (as Arturo Bernal Leyda), Rolf Petersen (as Ramón Avendaño), Carlos Hernán Romo (as Benjamín Avendaño) (a fictionalized portrayal of Benjamín Arellano Félix), Héctor Holten (as President Carlos Salinas de Gortari), Diego Vásquez (as Ismael Zambrano), Paul Choza (as Chente), Luis Rábago (as General Roberto Blanco Macías), Dolores Heredia (as Gabriela Saavedra).

The El Chapo series is created by Silvana Aguirre and co-created by Carlos Contreras. It was produced by Daniel Posada. All Episodes of the third and final season are helmed by Ernesto Contreras alongside Julian de Tavira and Carlos Moreno.

Why won’t there be El Chapo Season 4?

Sadly, the fourth instalment won’t be renewed as the show makers already made it very clear that the third season was the final outing of the series. Besides, the third season was completed in El Chapo who got justice after Don Sol doubted El Chapo had lain low with Marcelo and sent the armed forces to locate him.

In a chat with Forbes, Silvana Aguirre stated that “This season sees the culmination of the journey the characters of El Chapo and Don Sol started in season one.” He added, “It has been a great challenge to tell this important story with all its complexities and nuances. We have been privileged to see the audience’s reaction around the world and the success of the series to date is a testament to the incredibly talented team that worked on the show in the past three years.” Meaning, the series has wrapped for good. The third season has a clean ending and is satisfactory. It’s highly doubtful that we’d be getting a new season in the future.

If you haven’t watched El Chapo, all three seasons are available to stream on Netflix. Go watch now!

“Season 3 concludes El Chapo and Don Sol’s journey from season one,” showrunner Silvana Aguirre revealed on El Chapo season 4 cancellation.

Netflix terminated the show after three seasons in 2018. Silvana Aguirre, the showrunner, said the third season was inevitable.

Interviewing in 2018, Aguirre said:

“This season concludes El Chapo and Don Sol’s journey from season one.” She added that the show had told its narrative and did not need a fourth season.

The El Chapo cast also likes the conclusion. El Chapo actor Marco de la O is “proud” of the show’s cast and crew. Stay tuned for further updates!

El Chapo season 3 ending explained

Season 3 of El Chapo continues with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera (Marco de la O) mourning the loss of his son, Édgar Guzmán López. As El Chapo grieves, Beltrán Leyva Cartel head Arturo Beltrán Leyva (Humberto Busto) attacks the Sinaloa Cartel.

El Chapo hides in Colombia when Mexico exiles him. After returning to Mexico, he rebuilds his cartel. He strikes new deals, including with the DEA. After El Chapo returns to Mexico, the Sinaloa Cartel fights the Beltrán Leyva Cartel and other cartels, causing additional carnage. Mexico wants to apprehend El Chapo.

The Mexican army captures El Chapo. He received a life term for cocaine trafficking in the US after extradition. Major El Chapo Season 3 events:

  • The death of his son forces Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera to depart Mexico.
  • Arturo Beltrán Leyva attacks Sinaloa Cartel at El Chapo’s mourning.

El Chapo Ratings & Review

Season 3 of El Chapo was a Netflix hit. It was one of the most-watched shows on Netflix in 2018.

Overall, El Chapo Season 3 was a captivating and well-made show that shed light on the life of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. The show was hailed for its realism and depiction of the Mexican drug war but criticized for its violence.
