Vehicles parked in front of fire hydrants are sometimes common especially in busy streets but there are several reasons as to why one should not do it with even firefighters themselves warning the general public on the matter. VHMedia & Co, a YouTube channel, recently posted a video of a car with broken windows through which a hose is connected to a fire hydrant.
When an emergency strikes, fire hydrants are of significant use and it is necessary for firefighters to not have any obstruction in front of it, to carry on with their task. There have been incidents in the past such as the one from 2019 when firefighters had to conduct a rescue mission at an apartment whose kitchen had caught fire. However, upon arrival they had found a car parked in front of a fire hydrant. Given the intensity of the situation, the firefighters had to smash its windows in order to connect the hose. It appears that the recent incident also occurred in a similar manner. Also, parking in front of a fire hydrant will give the vehicle owner a ticket with the vehicle most likely being towed. Besides parking in front of fire hydrants, the issue of improperly parked cars is prevalent across many cities and they stop firefighters from performing their rescue missions. The obstruction is also a problem due to the fact that most of the time, the owners aren’t around to move their vehicles.
What could be understood from such incidents is the necessity to abide by traffic rules and basic safety measures as when disobeyed can not just impact oneself but also the people around them. Fire Hydrants are crucial when cases involving fire occur and the priority is always for the Firefighters and Hospital/ Emergency personnel who are tasked with the protection of lives.
