A remake of ‘Rope’, the 1948 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock is reportedly under production and is rumored to star Hollywood’s own Charlize Theron. The feature film is supposedly being developed under Davis Entertainment and will be shot in London. ‘Rope’ was originally a Psychological Thriller and the upcoming remake will be based on the original plot of the 1948 film.
Joining the crew as the film’s producers are
John Davis and John Fox. John Davis is an established producer and founder of Davis Entertainment which has produced a number of projects with many being box office successes. Some of their productions include, ‘Predator’, an action/ horror film released in 1987, ‘Shaft’ which was directed by Tim Story and starred Samuel L. Jackson among others, and ‘Game Night’ which featured Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman in lead roles. John Fox is another known producer. Steve Knight will be composing the screenplay for the upcoming remake while Rupert Goold will be directing the film. Rupert Goold is a known filmmaker with a number of projects to his name. The upcoming remake of ‘Rope’ will be streamed on Netflix possibly in the following year.
Plot of ‘Rope’
The film narrates the tale of two young men, Brandon and Philip who live in an apartment in New York City and one day decides to murder their friend and invite the victim’s family to their apartment. Considering themselves to be intellectually superior to their friend David Kentley, the two men suddenly decide to murder him. Upon killing David Kentley, the two characters then proceed to place the body in an old chest. This is followed by a party hosted by them whose guests include, David’s father, his fiancée Janet, and their old professor Cadell.
For the upcoming remake, Charlize Theron will most likely portray Professor Cadell. Professor Cadell is relevant to the original story as the two antagonists of the story attribute their doings to Professor Cadell. What is left to see is how Charlize Theron brings her creative input to the portrayal of the character.
The Original ‘Rope’
‘Rope’ was originally a play written by Patrick Hamilton who also wrote the screenplay for the 1948 film. The film also had Hume Cronyn join the crew as the film’s writer. The members of the cast for the 1958 film included, James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger among others.
Seeing as how the plot for the upcoming remake remains similar to the original, elements of the 1948 film’s style and visualisation might potentially be reprised.
