In 2022, there were ten million overweight individuals in Canada, with a YouGov survey noting that 48% of the Canadian adult population is attempting to lose weight. However, dropping the pounds can be more complex than consuming fewer calories and moving more. When motivation fails, external social support can go a long way in keeping you on track. For instance, a meta-analysis published in the Obesity Journal of nearly 5,000 adults found that social support was associated with significant weight loss at the end of the intervention. The positive effects continued to be seen even at the three- and six-month follow-ups. So what exactly makes social support so crucial, and how can individuals find weight loss groups to maintain momentum on a weight loss journey?

The link between weight loss and social support

Today’s modern lifestyles have made people more disconnected than ever, but joining a group can help build accountability regarding weight loss. In a study published in BMC Nutrition, individuals reported feeling a sense of responsibility toward other group members, which fueled their attendance in the study’s behavioral change and weight management programs. Others reported the benefits of joining a weight loss group because they lived alone and had no one to help them attain a sense of control. This is relevant, as 15% of all Canadian adults live alone. A wellness support group can create a natural barrier against reverting to poor lifestyle habits.

Social support also translates into the numbers on the scale. A Clinical Obesity study revealed that people who work out in groups were more likely to lose at least 5% of their body weight after one year compared to those who exercised alone. In addition, a University of Illinois study followed women who did an eighteen-week weight loss program – and those who participated in weekly accountability meetings – maintained the weight they lost, even after 1.5 years. Weight loss groups can be particularly helpful for people attempting to lose weight for the first time.

Seeking weight loss groups

Whether you’re a beginner to lifestyle changes or have made attempts in the past, it can be challenging to seek a genuinely supportive weight loss group. For one, you may not be comfortable asking for help from friends or family about weight loss. New connections could provide a non-judgmental starting point; by Googling “weight loss groups near me,” users can learn about reputable groups that offer the support and accountability they crave from fellow group members and dedicated coaches. Individuals can work on sustainable weight goals despite busy schedules by setting aside thirty minutes a week dedicated to health and wellness, either in person or virtually. Workshops also allow solo dwellers to connect with like-minded people, which may lead to social interactions outside the workshop setting, such as sharing tips or prepping meals together.

As mentioned earlier, some individuals may not receive adequate support on their weight loss journey in other social spheres of life. According to a study by Current Obesity Reports, family members may be a source of hurtful and critical comments, while some friends feel threatened by the weight loss of others. This may pressure you to consume excessive calories because of their imposed social norms. In a weight loss group, everyone has the same goal and shares common struggles, making it more likely for you to receive genuine support. Such groups may provide a more welcoming environment for exercise- or nutrition-related questions, such as consuming fruits like pineapple for weight loss or incorporating interval training into your week. However, group support only works when individuals remain dedicated to their goals. By showing up regularly and seeking help when you’re not at your best, you can leverage your weight loss group for success on the scale and socially.
