Veteran actor Tom Selleck has shared a thoughtful perspective on his future in the Blue Bloods universe, expressing reluctance to join the recently launched spinoff Boston Blue. In a candid interview with Hour Detroit published on November 11, the 80-year-old star, who portrayed Frank Reagan for 14 seasons, addressed speculation about reprising his role. “I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue. That’s another show,” Selleck remarked, signaling a desire to move beyond the character that defined his recent career.

Selleck’s hesitation stems from his commitment to preserving Blue Bloods’ legacy, which ended in December 2024 after 293 episodes. He emphasized, “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.” The series’ cancellation by CBS in 2023, despite ranking as the sixth most-watched broadcast show (excluding football), left him frustrated, a sentiment he reiterated: “It was a huge disappointment. I still don’t know why CBS did it.”
Looking ahead, Selleck hinted at exploring comedy, citing past successes like Friends and Three Men and a Baby, rather than returning to the Reagan family narrative. Meanwhile, Boston Blue, starring Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan, premiered in October 2025, filling the Friday 10 p.m. slot. Wahlberg has expressed openness to Selleck’s involvement, suggesting a potential New York-Boston crossover, but Selleck remains noncommittal, focusing on new horizons.
