Madonna has landed her first solo entry on Spotify’s Global chart with “Danceteria,” a track from her new album Confessions II, Pop Base reported Friday on X — nearly 43 years after she made her recording debut.
Confessions II is Madonna’s fifteenth studio album, released on July 3, 2026, through Warner Records. Conceived as a sequel to Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005), it reunites her with producer Stuart Price, who co-wrote and co-produced the original. The album also features guest appearances by Sabrina Carpenter, Feid, Stromae, and Madonna’s eldest daughter Lola Leon.
A Song Rooted in Club History
“Danceteria” was inspired by Madonna’s early days partying at the Danceteria club. In the lyrics, she mentions friends from that era including Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Martin Burgoyne, Debi Mazar, and Mark Kamins. The track also interpolates Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” (1973).
The nightclub Danceteria was a well-known venue in New York City between 1980 and 1986. The location holds a particular significance in Madonna’s origin story: she managed to get Mark Kamins, the resident DJ at Danceteria, to play “Everybody” — one of the songs from her demo tape — and the crowd’s positive reaction led Kamins to take her to Sire Records, where label president Seymour Stein signed her.
“Everybody” was released on October 6, 1982, as the debut single of Madonna’s entire career. The single reached number three on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. The Spotify milestone with “Danceteria” arrives roughly 43 years after that commercial debut.
Confessions II received critical acclaim, with reviewers from The Guardian, The Independent, NME, Rolling Stone, and others calling it Madonna’s best album since Confessions on a Dance Floor. According to Metacritic, the album received “universal acclaim” based on a weighted average score of 83 out of 100. BBC News’s Mark Savage praised “Danceteria” as the album’s best track.
The excitement surrounding the release was driven in part by an extensive marketing campaign that included a Coachella cameo during Sabrina Carpenter’s set, a partnership with the dating app Grindr, and a star-studded short film featuring songs from the album. Madonna premiered the film at the Tribeca Film Festival before sharing it globally via YouTube.
