Meet Marcus Ericsson – a talented racing driver from Kumla of Sweden born on September 2 of 1990. He got his start in motorsports at an incredibly young age participating in karting events at just nine years old. As he got older, his passion for racing only grew stronger and he soon moved on to bigger and better things. In 2007, he took home the championship in the UK series of the Formula BMW. The following year, he made his debut in the British Formula Three Championship where he finished in an impressive third place overall.
But Marcus was just getting started. In 2010, he moved on to the GP2 series which is the primary feeder series to Formula One and competed three to four seasons. By the time he wrapped up his last season in 2013, he had claimed sixth place overall. It was clear that Marcus was a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack.
Despite his dedication to his craft, Marcus never let his education suffer. While attending high school in Kurma, he had to juggle his studies with his racing commitments. However, his hard work and determination paid off and he managed to graduate with flying colours. But Marcus didn’t stop there. He enrolled in a distance learning program at Linkoping University where he studied economics.
Career highlights:
In 2007, Marcus proved himself as a force to be reckoned with by winning the Formula BMW UK championship. He continued to shine as he made his debut in the GP2 Series in 2010 and even secured his first victory in Valencia later that same year.
Ericsson’s big break came in 2013 when he not only finished sixth in the GP2 Series championship but also made his Formula One debut for the Caterham F1 Team at the Australian Grand Prix. In 2015, he joined the Sauber F1 Team where he spent three successful seasons and even achieved his best finish of eighth place at the Australian Grand Prix.
In the following year, Ericsson made headlines once again when he earned his first points finish in Formula One with a ninth place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix. But that wasn’t the end of his story as he made the bold decision to leave Formula One at the end of the 2018 season and joined the IndyCar Series with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (now Arrow McLaren SP) in 2019.
His hard work and dedication paid off as he secured his first podium finish in the IndyCar Series with a fantastic second place finish at the 2020 Grand Prix of Indianapolis. With so many remarkable achievements under his belt, there’s no doubt that Marcus is one of the most talented racing drivers of his generation.
