Andrew Rannells is openly gay!
Andrew Rannells is, in fact, out as gay. He came out to the public in a 2014 interview with The New York Times. Since then, he has worked to promote the rights of LGBTQ+ people and has made use of his platform to do so.
The author of “Too Much Is Not Enough: A Memoir of Fumbling Towards Adulthood,” Rannells, talks openly about his experiences coming to grips with his sexuality and navigating the entertainment business as a gay man in his memoir.
Rannells is familiar with the other viewpoint. In 2000, he performed James in the musical theatre production Pokemon Live!, which was his first significant gig in New York. Rannells’ first gay role was James.
However, it was replete with stereotypically gay tropes including campy clothing, a purple wig, and too sentimental language. It definitely wasn’t three dimensional. Instead, it merely satisfied the desire for a gay stereotype. Nothing further.
He explains, still sounding a little traumatised, “The problems started when we had to put on the costumes because we rehearsed in Radio City and were just in our normal rehearsal clothes.” “It was a difficult day when I had to wear the wig. Oh sh*t. Like, I momentarily lost focus on what we were doing before being abruptly hit in the face with it and said, “Here’s the wig.”
Before he went into a coma and ultimately passed away from his heart attack, Rannell’s father knew it was his last position. He says, a picture of his father on the wall behind him, “If there is a heaven and if he is looking down I hope that he’s like, oh he did get some better work.”
The Nebraska roots are robust despite playing significant roles in New York. Photos of his grandparents are displayed next to those of his father as a means for him to transport them to New York with him. Family matters can be challenging, and sharing coming-out tales is a source of pride, but Rannells maintains that his Midwestern family may have been informed.
He states categorically, “No one was surprised. “No, there wasn’t, yeah. Nobody was surprised. After coming out, he immediately relocated to New York and began pursuing a career in acting. Ten years after Pokemon Live!, he played the lead in one of the most well-known Broadway musicals in recent memory, The Book of Mormon.
