Every technological advancement has a history that is sometimes never understood. When in vitro fertilization (IVF) became a proven success, it opened a new and efficient possibility to the people who encountered infertility. What developed was a progression that decreased the chances of miscarriages and grew conception rates. Netflix’s upcoming project accounts this revolutionizing invention through a feature film titled, ‘Joy’. Being produced under Wildgaze Films, a London based film and television production company, ‘Joy’ will be based on the true story behind the world’s ‘first test tube baby’, Louise Joy Brown.
With Thomasin McKenzie, Bill Nighy and James Nortonin supposedly joining the cast, ‘Joy’ will narrate the journey of Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards and Jean Purdy, in developing the invention and how the process carried on through the couple Lesley and John Brown who eventually gave birth to a healthy girl. ‘Joy’ will also focus on the oppositions that the trio faced from religious institutions, media and medical establishments in performing an IVF. Ben Taylor, the director of the fan favorite, ‘Sex Education’ series will be directing ‘Joy’ which has supposedly commenced its production in September, this year with United Kingdom serving as the location for the feature film.
A look at the Cast and Crew
Thomasin McKenzie, who is reportedly in talks for a spoof parody titled, ‘Fackham Hall’, and is set to join ‘Joy’, is a talented artist whose films include, ‘Last Night in Soho’, ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ and ‘Old’. Bill Nighy is a renowned actor who is known for his roles in movies, ‘Love Actually’, ‘About Time’ and the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film series in which he played the role of Davy Jones, the main antagonist. James Nortonin is another popular film and television actor whose works include, ‘Grantchester’, ‘McMafia’, ‘Things Heard and Seen’ and more.
Some of Ben Taylor’s other notable works are, ‘The Rosie Project’ and ‘Schutzengel Gesucht’. Jack Thorne and Rachel Mason will be writing the screenplay for ‘Joy’ which is predicted to be in the style of a biopic. Jack Thorne is a skilled writer who is known for, ‘His Dark Materials’, ‘Enola Holmes’ film series, ‘Best Interests’ and others. Rachel Mason is a notable filmmaker whose works include, ‘The Lives of Hamilton Fish’. Other additions to the crew include producers, Finola Dwyer (‘Me Without You’, ‘Brooklyn’ and ‘A Long Way Down’), Amanda Posey (‘Brooklyn’, ‘A Long Way Down’ and ‘Dirt Music’) and Cameron McCracken (‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Selma’).
Though there has been no official updates on the premiere of the film, ‘Joy’ is expected to potentially release in 2024.
