Several cases have been reported all across the world on drug smuggling into prison via supposed visitors. While strict action does end up getting taken on the smugglers, the crime continues to happen with many instigated by drug rackets. Below are some of the cases caught which alarmed the world.
In 2018, surveillance footage was released which showcased a woman handing over her daughter to a prison inmate. In what seemed like a normal interaction between the visitors and the inmates, something else had been hiding. According to what was found by a Correction officer at the time, the woman was delivering contraband to the inmate through the child by slipping it in the child’s pants. The Inmate was caught on camera removing the contraband from the child and hiding it in his own pants. Despite the fact that the recording showcased this exchange quite clearly, officers could not charge the woman nor the inmate as cavity searches are prohibited. Cases of this sort have been reported in the 2000s, when in 2004 “mothers” used children to smuggle drugs across multiple countries by hiding cocaine among others in formula bottles while posing as the children’s mothers. However, the drugracket did not supposedly smuggle drugs to prison, instead their focus was on circulating the same in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
A case was reported in India in 2020 when a fellow inmate was murdered for outing the drug supply that had been happening within the prison walls. The inquiry which was led revealed that the drugs were smuggled via the compound walls. The drugs which were thrown over the compound wall would be picked up by prisoners who would then spell it to other inmates. In 2023, another case on drug smuggling had been reported with a mental health nursing assistant at the prison being involved in the chain who was caught along with other conspirators.
