Tomb Raider 2 has been in development for years but has encountered many obstacles along the way mainly because of the ongoing pandemic. Not only that but Tomb Raider 2 release date was delayed, filming which was scheduled to kick off in November 2020 was postponed and moreover, it lost its director. It’s an absolute bummer but it’s safe to say that Tomb Raider 2 is happening, the movie we’ve all been waiting for.
In January 2021, it was confirmed that Misha Green will be taking over the directing duties from Ben Wheatley. Green will also be in charge of penning the script replacing Amy Jump.
Star Alicia Vikander described her excitement to work with Green to which she said “I hope we go and make another movie. Because of the pandemic, we had plans of shooting this film, and now it’s been one and a half years, but Misha Green is on board, and she’s writing a draft right now.”
Vikander continued, “It’s pretty amazing — we’re, like, the same age! I was like, ‘Oh, I’m just now on a Zoom with an extremely talented woman that I think has done some incredible work.’ It would be so amazing if we get to go and do this very big-ass film together, going to kick some ass in front of the camera and behind the camera, you know?”

Tomb Raider 2 release date: When is it?
Back in the Summer of 2021, actress Alicia Vikander revealed that ‘Tomb Raider 2’ the sequel to Tomb Raider wasn’t officially confirmed, but the actress is ready to reprise her role as Lara Croft if a sequel happens. Vikander also disclosed that that the script is still in the early stages.
“Pre-COVID, I would’ve said yes. And now I think it’s a yes still. It’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited and I would love to revisit Lara again.”
Coming back to the release date, Tomb Raider 2 was originally slated for a release in March 2022. However, filming had to be postponed and work was abruptly halted. The main reason being the pandemic.
As of now, there is no specific release date or any other details for Tomb Raider 2. However, we can expect the sequel to be out by the end of 2022 or sometime in 2023.
The Cast
Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, the lead character, will definitely return. Except for her, nothing has been confirmed yet. But we expect to see Daniel Wu as Lu Ren to reprise his role in the upcoming movie. Other than this, we’ll have to wait for more updates.
Plot: What to Expect?
The plot for the upcoming movie is still not known especially now that the movie has a new director, there’s a possibility that the whole concept of the movie will likely change too as Misha Green, also the director and the writer will be rewriting the entire script of Tomb Raider II.
Alicia Vikander said: “I can’t say anything about the plot. But I’m looking forward to it, and I think they’re going to do a really good job.”
Also in another interview with Alicia she said, “It’s very different to anything I’ve done before. It’s a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it.” Alicia continued on, “But first I’ve got some other things coming up that are going to be very different too.”
When asked about the character she explained, I can’t say anything about my character because everything has been kept so secret.” But she described her role as “quite a strong character.”
Alicia concluded by saying that Tomb Raider II might arrive by next year. Here’s what she said,“We’re not sure yet. I believe it’s coming out next year.”
