The Crown is one of the most controversial TV shows in the UK. The series has had polarising reviews. While some Britishers find it interesting, others strongly criticise it. However, The Crown has managed to maintain a successful viewership, irrespective of the negative remarks. So far there are five seasons of the series.
Here’s everything you need to know about the sixth season of The Crown, including the release date, cast, and other details.
Will there be a season 6 of The Crown?
It’s official! Netflix has officially renewed The Crown for season 6. The sixth season, however, will be the final season of the entire series. That was the original plan back when the show first began. But for a while there, things shifted – so that The Crown was going to end with season five instead.
Thankfully, that’s no longer the case since creator Peter Morgan changed his mind back in July 2020. Here’s his official statement from Netflix, in case you’re wondering why that might have happened: “As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.”
The Crown season 6 release date
The shooting for the sixth season has already begun. However, there’s no official release date for now. We can expect the series to air around November 2023.
But things might be a bit different this time. Given that filming for season six was paused following the Queen’s death.
Writer Peter Morgan explained this decision in more detail during a chat with Deadline where he said: “The Crown is a love letter to her and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect. I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”

What to expect from the season 6 plot of The Crown?
Following an early table read in August 2022, star Dominic West told Deadline that the final season “will be as tumultuous as it gets”. And, he isn’t wrong. In the final season of The Crown, we will witness Princess Diana’s tragic death on screen.
According to one of Deadline’s sources, there was an atmosphere of “anxiety behind the scenes” ahead of filming that moment, even though Diana’s actual demise won’t be shown on screen.
“We’ve been dreading getting to this point,” a source told Deadline. “The countdown is two weeks and while we’re calmly carrying on, it’s fair to acknowledge that there’s a certain anxiety, a palpable sense of being slightly on the edge. I mean, there’s bombshell sensitivity surrounding this one.”
That’s most likely why the writers have decided to focus instead on the build-up to Diana’s death, followed immediately by the aftermath. Depicting the crash in full would be a step too far, for many. Stay connected with us for more updates!
