Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away 1 debuted in July 2001. Since then, the animated feature film has garnered the attention of fans the world over. Two decades have passed since the movie’s release, yet fans still await its sequel. Here comes the same old question, “Would there be a Spirited Away 2?” We have tried to answer this below. Spirited Away 1: What Was it About?
Spirited Away follows the story of Chihiro and Haku. Chihiro finds herself in a world of gods, beasts, and spirits after her father took a shortcut and accidentally arrived at an abandoned village. Despite his daughter’s warnings, the father is eager to explore the new place. Later, he and his wife turn into pigs after gulping down food at an empty restaurant. Amid this unreal universe, Chihiro meets Hako, who has the power to turn into a dragon. Hako warns the girl to cross the riverbed before the sun sets. However, it’s too late as the river is overflowing. Later, Hako asks Chihiro to get a job at a bathhouse run by Yubaba. Chihiro is given a new name, Sen, but she is not supposed to forget her real name or she would be stuck in the spirit world forever.
After Hako’s dragon identity is revealed to Chihiro, she forms a special bond with him, which leads to the obliteration of the golden magic seal’s curse. In exchange for the lives of Chihiro’s parents, Hako promises to bring back Broh, Yubaba’s son. Before parting ways, the companions, Haku and Sen, promise to see each other again. Chihiro is once again on her way to her new home with her parents.
Many fans have questioned why Chihiro did not look back at Hako. This is because doing so, she would get caught between the two dimensions. Or probably, the face of her love, Hako will not let her return to the real world.
Spirited Away 2: Is it coming?
Miyazaki has defied the past claims of a sequel. It is a known fact that Studio Ghibli focuses on original feature films rather than sequels. In their history, they have never made the second part of any of their previous works. They believe in creating movies that bring the best to their audience.
Spirited away 1 is a complete piece in itself. However, the question of whether Haku and Chihiro will keep their promise or not is still a mystery.
So chances are that a sequel may not happen and keep the ending as the makers believe that it will only ruin the true meaning of the entire story. But one can very say never and keep the hope alive.
