When the series “Sharp Objects” hit the screen, boy did it meet with such positive critical acclaim and audience response. Entirely thanks to Amy Adams’s performance opposite her abusive mother.
Although Sharp Objects was billed as a mini-series, fans couldn’t find themselves okay with the fact that there won’t be another season. But what’s the status like?
At one point, showrunner Marti Noxon gives us all the hope that the series will return for another season but then she trips…
Showrunner Marti Noxon raised fans’ hopes for a comeback of “Sharp Objects” at SXSW.
“Maybe there will be a sequel. Maybe we’ll get to find out [more about Adora and Camille’s sister],” Noxon said during her keynote, per Deadline. “Gillian [Flynn] and I have thoughts on it.”
Marti also revealed that initially, when the series aired, she wanted to convey the story over multiple seasons. She and the author of the novel, Flynn, who also executively produced the show, originally saw Sharp Objects to have more than one season.
During a Q&A session after her SXSW keynote, Noxon said that both of them wanted to tell the story over multiple seasons. However, their only concern was this way the plot would become much longer and more complex than that of the book, wherein the storyline was largely focused on Camille (Amy Adams).
The project, however, later became a limited series, largely following Flynn’s source material.
Cut short, “Sharp Objects” won’t have a season 2, and here’s why…
Last month at SXSW, the showrunner of the series, Marti Noxon, was in a conversation with the author of the book, Gillian Flynn. They spoke about continuing the series “Big Little Lies” – obviously the Amy Adams-led hit.
However, Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming, tells Deadline that he doubts there will be a second season to the Emmy-contender series Sharp Objects.
“They haven’t come to us with anything, and my suspicion is one season was right for that show,” Bloys said.
“I can’t imagine getting everybody back. The hard thing about these things is that one season is trying to get everybody back together, but also, it feels like the one season was the right thing for that show. It was the right ending, so I think that’s probably where it will stay.”
Season 2 has been cancelled – Sharp Objects is a one and done series!
Bloys’ comments echoed the ones he made last summer when the series debuted, saying that HBO was happy with “Sharp Objects” as a one-and-done series. He further said that Adams likely doesn’t want to revisit his dark character repeatedly.
Unlike Big Little Lies, where all the cast members wanted to come back for another season, Sharp Objects’ characters had a different mindset. Because their characters are all so dark and gloomy, so revisiting them yet again isn’t something they want, Bloys explains.
He said, “Amy doesn’t want to live in this character again and I can’t blame her, it’s a lot to take on for an actress,” he said then. “So no plans for a second season. We are very happy with this being a limited series.”
There we have it – Sharp Objects season 2 has been canceled!
There are reasons why it was billed as a limited series in the first place
After the first season finale aired, Noxon shot down rumors of a return, largely because of logistical difficulties.
“It’s off the table in terms of, people are going on to their next projects, and it was a pretty hard A-team to assemble,” she told the Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s not hard to imagine from a story standpoint, because obviously we love these characters, but from a technical standpoint, it seems like a long shot.”
HBO Executive Casey Bloys revealed that a season 2 was unlikely
In April, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys quashed fans’ hopes for a season two.
“They haven’t come to us with anything, and my suspicion is one season was right for that show,” Bloys said of the Sharp Objects team, per IndieWire.
“I can’t imagine getting everybody back. The hard thing about these things is that one season is trying to get everybody back together, but also, it feels like the one season was the right thing for that show. It was the right ending, so I think that’s probably where it will stay.”
