Last season, in terms of sales, Quest 2 took the market by storm. With its 120Hz refresh rate, Oculus 2 is one of the best VR headsets available in the market. Even in 2022, it’s outperforming VR headsets from the other brands and continues to be relevant.
Today, the obvious question is when could the third generation of Oculus Quest 3 be released, and what could be the upgrades in its design and specs.
At the moment, the news on Oculus Quest 3 is nothing more than speculation. Let’s see what we know so far about Quest 3.
- A source confirms Meta will launch Oculus Quest 3 and its pro version called Cambria in the second quarter this year, sometime between April and June.
Meta Cambria (Q2 2022) will include MiniLED screens. Targeting to sell 3 million HMD units in its first year.
Quest 3 is planned to include uOLED. Meta signed deal to build production lines for these displays with Changxin Technology

- We have had hints from Meta’s VP of AR and VR during an Ask Me Anything session about a more advanced version of Oculus Quest since the future of VR software technology requires equivalent hardware power.
- We may find a change in the branding of the Oculus Quest lineup since Facebook has rebranded itself to Meta in 2021. We speculate that new headsets may be branded as Meta Quest.
- Quest 3 would work along with Facebook’s Metaverse and it makes sense that it may also require a Facebook login
Let’s face it, if Meta could pull off what gamers are expecting based on its last instalment, Oculus Quest 3 could beat the rest of the virtual reality headsets to punch.
Let’s find out more about its approximate release date, new features and pricing.
Oculus Quest 3 Release Date: When is it?
By far, there is no official release date for Oculus Quest 3, however, through android central, we are assured about seeing an advanced version of the last generation headsets sooner than later.
The spec upgrades to Oculus Quest 2 were massive. For example, the refresh rate was beefed up from 90Hz to 120Hz, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Oculus Quest 3 toys with 144Ghz refresh rate, or even higher to allow an even smoother experience.
Meta is likely to pack a punch by using 4K uOLED panels, a recent development on the existing OLED tech, with a 2040×2000 resolution. This technology might take the pixel-per-inch number to 880 PPI.
In terms of processor, it will make sense if Meta utilizes the successor of Snapdragon XR2 in their new device. It might as well be that Meta will go with an autonomous approach and develop their own silicon instead of relying on Snapdragon for their chips.
We have learned from the Apple M1 chip how the software and hardware could synergise each other if developed by the same brand and Meta could be well on their way to follow the same footsteps.
Oculus Quest 3 may feature a VR experience
Coming to the most life-like part of the VR experience that Meta may include in their Quest 3 controllers, haptic feedback. It could feature haptic feedback both in the headset and the controller the way other brands have approached it.
The new VR headsets may also include hand tracking in a similar way Quest 2 does, with of course a few upgrades and tweaks, making them more powerful and accurate.
What we also expect from the upcoming Oculus Quest 3 is to fix and fill the lacks of the Quest 2. Launching rechargeable controllers is a no-brainer, along with a full-body tracking system. Adding Bluetooth support would further heighten the experience.
Requesting along the lines of the other gaming fans, an enhanced premium strap or VR gloves would be a good addition. Unlike Quest 2, we would want the new addition to include expandable storage up to 512 GB.
At the cost of sounding too excited, let us also expect an official charging dock. That’s it.
A lot has changed for Facebook in the last quarter, it would be exciting to see how it achieves a solid foothold in the VR industry in 2022.
This is all we know at the moment. However, we will keep you updated with the latest advancements on Oculus Quest 3, and virtual reality, and everything in between. Stay tuned.
