“Real money online gambling in Canada is now more accessible than ever. You can take your pick from premium sites and bet on sports, play casino games, join poker tables, buy bingo tickets, and more.” – Vlad Grindu (Techopedia Gambling Expert)

Canada’s gambling landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years, with online gambling rapidly rising to prominence due to the country’s biggest province, Ontario, legalizing the activity through the 2022 creation of its own licensing and regulation processes for online casinos and sportsbooks.

Ontario’s pathfinding legislation is already renowned as the blueprint for online gambling in Canada being accessible in other provinces and territories, although similar regulatory methods still require further definition in the nine other Canadian provinces that permit online gambling.

As far back as 1985, online gambling was already legal at a federal level when the Canadian Government permitted its provinces to create individual gambling regulations. Before 2021, this could only take the form of parlay bets, where two or more bets are combined, and pari-mutuel gambling, available through lottery systems implemented in individual provinces.

As a result, Canadians sought out offshore online options to better fulfil their gambling needs, resulting in an estimated $14 billion finding its way into offshore coffers every year. It became clear to the Canadian Government that change was needed to benefit from its citizens’ spending while providing suitable alternatives to satisfy their online needs and enhance their legal gambling experiences.

The result has seen online gambling rapidly grow in Canada. We’ll examine some reasons for this growth and why this trend will likely continue.

Regulatory Changes and Legalization

Canadian federal lawmakers recognised the need to stem the offshore financial drain and, in June 2021, approved Bill C-218, commonly known as the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act.

Through this act, provinces in Canada could implement single sports betting systems within their jurisdictions, meaning they could begin granting online gambling licences to local applicants who conformed to the necessary regulatory standards. Ontario was quick to take advantage of the new betting act, putting plans that had been in motion over the previous decade into action.

While the changes in gambling regulations have created new opportunities for online casino and sportsbook operators, they have presented new challenges for Canada’s traditional brick-and-mortar establishments. Ultimately, finding future methods to incorporate both into the gambling framework would be ideal.

Convenience and Accessibility

The advent of legal online gambling in the country meant Canadians enjoyed levels of accessibility and convenience not found in traditional casinos and betting shops. Access to games and physical locations was no longer problematic, and anyone of legal age with an internet connection could gamble on several remote platforms.

Players had access to a wide range of slots, virtual games and tournaments, and sports betting markets from their computers, smartphones, or tablets at any time of day or night. This convenience means online gambling is an attractive option for Canadians in their quest for exciting entertainment.

Variety of Options

Legal online gambling in Canada means there’s no further need for residents to battle crowds to find available machines in physical casinos, and the choices at their fingertips online are vast and varied. Players have instant access to casino games like slots, blackjack, poker, and roulette, with most online gambling sites offering instant promotions, bonuses and loyalty programs.

Sports bettors can join online platforms offering betting opportunities on hockey, football, basketball, and various other sports, even esports. Not only can punters find the sporting codes of their preference, but the number of betting markets available allows for betting tailored to every sports supporter’s needs.

Social and Cultural Factors

Social and cultural factors are large contributors to the growth of Canada’s online gambling industry. The widespread popularity of online gaming and sports-supporting cultures in the country, coupled with the increasing acceptance of gambling as an entertainment form, has created fertile soil for online gambling in Canada to thrive.

Furthermore, there has been a shift towards all things online since COVID-19 and the resulting lockdowns. Nowadays, more people find remote entertainment forms to keep them occupied, and online gambling fits in with these perfectly.

Responsible Gambling and Consumer Protection

With Canadians moving to offshore gambling platforms before the legalization of online gambling in the country, many opened themselves up to unscrupulous activities by accessing sites that took advantage of unwitting and naive users. While the rise of regulated platforms presents new opportunities for gamblers,  it also ensures their activities are better protected and conducted more responsibly.

By identifying the risks encountered through many offshore platforms, Canadian gambling regulators have implemented ways to safeguard players and promote responsible gambling practices. Online operators in Canada are required to implement age verification checks while providing self-exclusion tools, enforcing deposit limits, and offering resources to assist and educate potential problem gamblers.

Economic Impact and Revenue Generation

With Canada’s online gambling industry rapidly growing, the economic impact on the provinces involved has been significant. The industry has created new revenue streams for online operators, software developers, and other stakeholders while affording provincial authorities additional income through gambling taxation on online providers, although amateur gamblers in Canada pay no tax.  This economic growth is also favourable for creating jobs.

While online gambling operators are benefiting from the industry’s growth, the negative impact on brick-and-mortar gambling establishments like racetracks and casinos remains a concern.

Conclusion

Looking ahead, Canada’s online gambling will likely experience continued growth as technological innovation continues. Online gambling platforms can expect further advancements, including virtual reality gambling, enhanced mobile gaming experiences, and increased numbers of live dealer games.

As more provinces adopt the successful Ontario blueprint, regulators will be well-positioned to strike a balance between promoting future technologies and protecting the consumer. In this way, online gambling will remain an enjoyable and safe entertainment form for growing numbers of Canadians.
