Finland has introduced its first transgender national figure skater, Minna-Maaria Antikainen
At the start of the European Figure Skating Championships in Espoo, a unique performance took place. Former male skater, Markku-Pekka Antikainen, who is now a female skater, Minna-Maaria Antikainen, put on a striking show. The farm owner-turned-hostess from Siilinjärvi received mixed reactions for their performance
According to Finnish news reports, which used both he and she pronouns interchangeably to refer to him (he identifies as a gender neutral woman), he had absolutely no skating abilities but had a “childhood dream” to become a professional figure skater.

The European Figure Skating Championships opening ceremony press release emphasized equality and diversity, inviting non-expert skaters to participate in the event.
