Crazy Rich Asians was a huge hit when it was first released in 2018, collecting over $235 million globally and receiving positive reviews from critics.
After delivering such an incredible movie, fans were curious to know if there’ll be a continuation in some sequel to the original film and the answer to that is a huge YES!
It’s no wonder that Warner Bros. hastily proceeded to develop a sequel adapted on Kevin Kwan’s novel sequel “China Rich Girlfriend,” published in 2013 along with the third book “Rich People Problems,” also planned to hit the theaters very soon.
The upcoming sequel hopes to bring back the same stars who appeared in the first hit movie; the filmmakers initially intended to shoot the films continuously in 2020. However, that plan couldn’t proceed due to COVID 19 pandemic-related issues, and some cast members were busy with other projects.
Want to find out more about Crazy Rich Asians 2? Here’s everything you need to know about the anticipated sequel.
Crazy Rich Asians 2 release date: When is it?
“Crazy Rich Asians” landed in theaters in August 2018. The second movie was being developed that month, with all the stars and the director willing to come back for more. During that time, the studio eventually scheduled to provide the official renewal when the script finished, but ever since that declaration, there’s little to no information. In 2021, actor Henry Golding claimed that the crew was still working on the script.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Golding said:
“There have been delays in the script, with writer Adele Lim leaving the project in 2019 due to pay disparity disputes. As of now, director Jon M. Chu and writer Peter Chiarelli have been working on the sequel. There has been no official release date announced. We can expect Crazy Rich Asians (or China Rich Girlfriend) to release sometime in late 2021.”
Considering that things are still stuck in the early development phase, it’s unknown when the official release date will be out.
The Cast of Crazy Rich Asians 2: Who will be in it?
The main cast of the first film are highly expected to return in the upcoming sequel that includes Constance Wu (as Rachel Chu), Henry Golding (as Nick Young), Gemma Chan (as Astrid Leong-Teo), Awkwafina (as Goh Peik Lin), Lisa Lu (as Nick’s Shang Su Yi), Ken Jeong (as Goh Wye Mun), Michelle Yeoh (as Eleanor Sung-Young).
Additionally, some new characters are likely to be introduced, but for now, the stars who’ll be playing these roles are to be revealed.
Speaking to E! Awkwafina admitted she has no clue if she would return for the sequel, but she hopes to and has her “fingers crossed” to play as Goh Peik Lin.
Shum Jr is optimistic, though, and explained to PopSugar: “We constantly have reunions. I don’t know if that’s our way of trying to satiate our void of not being able to work together in that capacity, but Awkwafina, Jimmy, and the rest of the crew, we constantly try and make ways to see each other.
The love is there, and if there’s an opportunity to make another one, then the love will definitely radiate on that screen if we ever get a chance to do it again.”
Crazy Rich Asian 2: What to expect?
Speaking to Digital Spy in September 2020, Golding said:
“They still have the two books that Kevin Kwan wrote and they’re trying to find an angle to convert them from page to script to film. It is a very complicated process because a novel visually sometimes does not make as much sense as on screen in a direct adaptation. So you really have to change it to make it enjoyable.”
Michelle Yeoh who plays as Eleanor, Nick’s mother, also claimed:
“These people aren’t just everyday rich with a few hundred million. They are China rich!”
It is assumed that Crazy Rich Asians 2 story will most probably centre on Rachel’s connection with her biological father and her half-brother. The procedure for composing the story for the sequel is very much complicated than the first movie as the writers are required to take out the story’s portrayal from the first movie and “China Rich Girlfriend,” as well as creating new plotlines for the characters.
