Clerks made its debut during the Sundance Film Festival, and it quickly gained attention from the audience. Clerks depict the frustration and scepticism of typical adults striving for a better future compared to their kins.
Unlike some films, Clerks was seen as a fair hit, collecting over $2.9 million in theatres against a very tight budget, but what’s even more surprising is, somehow quite a whole lot of people seem to have already seen it.
To this day, Clerks still managed to attract viewers with its unique yet relatable life events. Director Kevin Smith is set to return with Clerks 3 after more than a decade since the last film was released, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
Here’s everything we know about Clerks III release date, cast, and more:
Is Clerks 3 officially happening?
Kevin Smith confirmed back in October 1, 2019 on his Instagram handle to let the fans know that Clerks III was officially happening and that Jeff Anderson decided to return as Randal. The post captioned:
“It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It’ll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning—a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey. It’ll be a movie that stars Jeff and @briancohalloran, with me and Jay in supporting roles. And it’ll be a movie called CLERKS III!”
Clerks III Release Date: When is it?
Filming wrapped on August 31, 2021, but currently, there is no official release date. However, Clerks director Kevin Smith revealed that the film will arrive sometime in 2022 and also cited that filming for Clerks III was done in the exact location as the original movie, which was released on October 19, 1994.
Smith also disclosed that this movie is intended for movie enthusiasts who were there from the beginning. He said, “I know we’ve got fans who age with us…and it’s going to hit in a lot of secret places. I don’t think the 20-somethings are going to be like, ‘He’s still the voice of a generation!’ They’re going to be like, ‘Well, he’s the voice of middle age, if anything, at this point.’ I hope young people will find something to enjoy about it, but it’s definitely a movie about people who try to be young while being old.”
He continued, “That means not trying to hide the fact that his leads aren’t kids anymore. “All of us are in our late 40s, if not 50s…and you’ll see the progression. We don’t hide our age. We don’t Hollywood it up. We all look as old as we look. Um, except… Rosario.”
The cast of Clerks III: Is the original cast returning for Clerks III?
Yes, all the original cast of Clerks will be returning for Clerks III. It was confirmed that the major characters from both Clerks and Clerks II will be reprising their roles respectively.
Jeff Anderson (as Randal), Brian O’Halloran (as Dante), Jason Mewes (as Jay), Kevin Smith (Silent Bob), and Rosario Dawson (as Becky). Kevin Smith also serves as the writer and director for the upcoming film.
The plot
According to Deadline, the film picks up after the events of Randal’s heart attack.
Smith explained:
“Thanks to Lionsgate, we get to return to where it all started with almost the whole cast that started it all! And for the first time since the first time we ever made a movie in 1993, we’re shooting the entire flick on location in New Jersey, as an ode to both the enduring allure of cinema and the resourcefulness and lunacy of its storytellers.
“Years ago, Dante and Randal made me a filmmaker – so now it’s time I return the favour.”
Smith has confessed that his real-life experience inspired the movie. In January 2021, he wrote:
“This is a much more personal story than the previous incarnation, drawing directly on the heart attack that nearly killed me (3 years ago next month).”
“It was oddly triggering writing those scenes, as it was the first time in a while I contemplated how close I came to shuffling loose this mortal coil. But far more than making me mindful of my mortality, this script to Clerks III makes me laugh out loud.”
