Batgirl is finally getting a movie of its own and it is one of the most anticipated upcoming action-adventure superhero films in the DC Universe. Batgirl will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The film will be penned by Christine Hodson alongside Carmine Infantino and Gardner Fox. Its producer will be Kristin Burr.
Batgirl last appeared in the movie Batman and Robin and ever since then we haven’t heard of her. Batgirl is a well-known yet underappreciated character in the DC comics universe. It’s also confirmed that Batgirl is officially a part of the DCEU— one of the badass superheroes lineups.
Coming to the film, some years ago, Warner Bros declared that Joss Whedon would pen down the script as well as direct and produce an independent Batgirl movie that mainly centres on Barbara Gordon. However, almost a year later, he departed from the project alleging he had “failed to crack a story.”
Several months after Whedon’s departure, Warner Bros hired Christina Hodson to work on a new script for the upcoming movie Batgirl.
Producer Kristen Burr in a statement said: “With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham. Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Bat project. And I’m just psyched to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”
Who is Batgirl?
DC’s comics first introduced Batgirl in the 1960s as the alternate pseudonym of Betty Kane. However, it was later reintroduced in the Batman series by Adam West as Barbara, the daughter of the commissioner, Jim Gordon. The character had to be revised as TV execs wished to captivate more female audiences to the Batman television series. Barbara Gordon is the latest version of the Batgirl character.
Release date and the cast behind Batgirl
We know that actress and musician Leslie Grace will take on the female lead role for the upcoming movie “Batgirl” while J.K. Simmons is also expected to return and reprise his role as James Gordon who is the father of Batgirl. Other than these two characters, everything has been kept under wraps. The villains and other supporting roles are yet to be introduced.
As per the report by Illuminerdi, the character that is likely to be introduced as the antagonist in the movie “Batgirl” is the villain Firefly who is also linked with “Batman” infamous villain Killer Moth. He’s going to be the main villain to go against Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl in comics so hopefully, we get to see it in the upcoming movie as well.
Meanwhile, the release date of Batgirl has not been announced. Filmmakers are yet to provide a specific release date although it’s been confirmed to arrive in December 2022 and will be released exclusively on HBO Max.
