Conceived by Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick, the American crime thriller drama TV series titled “Absentia” premiered with its first season on September 25, 2017, on Amazon Prime Video in the US and released internationally on AXN. The series was helmed by Oded Ruskin, it features Stana Katic, Matthew Le Nevez and Patrick Heusinger.

The series has so far released a total of three seasons with the third season and also the final season published on July 17, 2020. Despite the success of the show, Amazon decided to cancel Absentia for a season 4 run. Here’s what we know about season 4 of Absentia.

Why was Absentia Season 4 Cancelled?

The series was intended to end with the third season and that’s why there won’t be a fourth season of Absentia.

Star Stana Katic who executively produced the show along with Oded Ruskin, Matt Cirulnick, Julie Glucksman, Maria Feldman, Tamir Kfir, Will Pascoe, Kasia Adamik, Sanford Golden, and Karen Wyscarver has come to a close after delivering its third and last season of the series.  Katic shared a post on her social media that reads:

“When they asked me in January 2017 if I was ready to spend 3 years in Bulgaria shooting a cable TV series, I had no idea what I was in for. I could never have imagined the creative partnerships and the friendships that would form and enrich my life,” she jotted down. “Three Seasons was the perfect amount of space for a beautiful, complicated and wonderfully fulfilling journey. We took our protagonist on the path of victim to survivor to … empowered architect of her own future, which is a journey I hope we can all have after this confounding year.”

The actress herself confirmed the news about the cancellation by sharing a tweet on her Twitter handle saying that “although we’ve danced with the idea of continuing the tale, Absentia was always meant to be only three seasons, and I couldn’t think of a better note to end on… for any person on this planet, but especially Emily and her loved ones.”

She also thanked her fans for all the love and support till the end of the show. “It is because of YOU that our show was a great success for its broadcasters,” she proceeded. “It’s because of YOU that we get to entertain you and be storytellers. And whatever projects this tribe of rebel storytellers goes to next, I hope you’ll follow them all.”

Absentia Season 4 Release Date

As previously mentioned, the show was discontinued after the third season so there is no release date for season 4 as it will not happen in the future.

The first season came out on September 25, 2017. The second season was released on March 26, 2019. The third and final season was launched on July 17, 2020.

Who are the Cast Members of Absentia?

Here are the names of the cast members of Absentia:

  • Stana Katic played Emily Byrne
  • Patric Heusinger acted as Nick Durand
  • Patrick McAuley played the role of Flynn Durand
  • Cara Theobold portrayed the role of Alice Durand
  • Neil Jackson played Jack Byrne
  • Angel Bonanni played Detective Tommy Gibbs
  • Bruno Bichir acted as Dr. Daniel Vega
  • Paul Freeman played Warren Byrne
  • Ralph Ineson portrayed Special Agent Adam Radford
  • Matthew Le Nevez in the role of Special Agent Cal Issac
  • Natasha Little played the character of Julliane Gunnarsen

Absentia Season 4 Plot Expectations

The third and final season of Absentia concludes with a detailed twist. Emily assists Nick and Flynn cheat their death through a house eruption. We witnessed Emily parting with her for the last time. Nick prepares to become more of a fatherly figure, while Emily readies to shake things up.

In the final moments, Emily was finally free and not turning her head to have a glimpse of the family. Her spot was stolen by Alice, and Nick and Flynn no longer wanted Emily to fill the void made by Alice.

Absentia ends in a way where Emily is finally free and is ready to start a new life which we couldn’t bargain for a better ending. Although the ending was somewhat okay-ish, it would be good if we could get a spin-off to see more of Emily Byrne in an action-packed adventure.

Where to watch Absentia?

All three seasons of Absentia are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
